Commending Pilgrim Baptist Church on the occasion of its 100th anniversary.

WHEREAS, Pilgrim Baptist Church and its faithful congregation celebrated their glorious centennial of service to the Lord and the Richmond community in 2009; and

WHEREAS, Pilgrim Baptist Church had its origins in the loving home of Christina Kemp and her daughter, Carrie Satterwhite; they gathered the children of the neighborhood into their home to teach Bible stories and lessons; and

WHEREAS, as the number of children outgrew the size of their home, the two women paid $3 a month out of their small earnings to rent a building in which to teach the children; and

WHEREAS, in 1909 the Reverend James H. Williams, along with the Reverend K.D. Turner, organized Pilgrim Baptist Church with the Reverend Williams as the first pastor; and

WHEREAS, in 1917 the members purchased a building from James Bailey at 2514 Bowling Green Road, which served the congregation until the new church building was erected in 1932 at 1900 Whitcomb Street; and

WHEREAS, Pilgrim Baptist Church members have grown in number and faith throughout the Church?s history, leading to an expansion of the facilities, including the acquisition of 9.4 acres of land in 2003 to build the Chelsea Hill Family Life and Resource Center; and

WHEREAS, Pilgrim Baptist Church has established several ministries to help those in the community, including a prison ministry; the Elizabeth Project, which provides mentors for pregnant teenagers; and a health and wellness ministry; and

WHEREAS, from its inception, Pilgrim Baptist Church has been blessed with dedicated and faithful members who possess a strong sense of cooperation and generously give of their time and talents to build the church; and

WHEREAS, Pilgrim Baptist Church has been served throughout its 100-year history by immensely dedicated and able pastors, who have provided visionary leadership, devout worship, meaningful Christian education, and enthusiastic ministry and community missions; and

WHEREAS, throughout its long history, Pilgrim Baptist Church has provided the devoted congregation, neighbors, and community with a special place to worship, to help others, and to grow in faith and service; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly commend Pilgrim Baptist Church on the occasion of its 100th anniversary; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the Reverend William Moore III, pastor of Pilgrim Baptist Church, as an expression of the General Assembly?s congratulations and best wishes for future success in the church?s ministry.
