WHEREAS, Jeter Guy Lawson, mayor of the Town of Exmore in Northampton County, died on June 10, 2009; and

WHEREAS, born to loving parents Florence Moore Lawson and the late Robert L. Lawson, Jr., Guy Lawson was one of two brothers; and

WHEREAS, known for his resolute manner and commitment to public service, Guy Lawson spent his adult life working to protect and better the communities of which he was a member; and

WHEREAS, Guy Lawson served diligently as a fire apparatus operator for the Norfolk City Fire Department for 29 years and was a life member and former fire chief for the Community Fire Company of Exmore; and

WHEREAS, Guy Lawson took the oath of office as mayor of the Town of Exmore in 1995; he also served as police commissioner and as a member of the town council for two terms; and

WHEREAS, as mayor for the Town of Exmore, Guy Lawson worked diligently to ensure the town?s economic development, balance the budget, and provide adequate utilities; and

WHEREAS, during Guy Lawson?s time as mayor, the Town of Exmore saw much growth and revitalization, including the creation of two municipal wastewater systems and the recruitment of new businesses; and

WHEREAS, Guy Lawson did not hesitate to go the extra mile on behalf of the citizens of Exmore; when faced with a budget shortfall, he and the members of the Town Council cut their salaries to nothing; and

WHEREAS, when a local store closed as part of a corporate downsizing, Guy Lawson spent days contacting various officials in an effort to keep the store open; and

WHEREAS, acknowledging his service to the community, in 2008 the Northampton County Chamber of Commerce recognized Guy Lawson as one of three ?Public Servants of the Year?; and

WHEREAS, Guy Lawson will be greatly missed by his mother and three loving daughters, Melanie, Dana, and Jenna and their families; numerous other family members and friends; and the citizens of the Town of Exmore; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly note with great sadness the loss of a dedicated public servant, Jeter Guy Lawson; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of Jeter Guy Lawson as an expression of the General Assembly?s respect for his memory.
