Commending Lieutenant General Samuel Vaughan Wilson, USA Ret.

WHEREAS, Lieutenant General Samuel Vaughan Wilson, United States Army retired, has served his country and the Commonwealth with an extraordinary devotion to duty and excellence; and

WHEREAS, a native of Southside Virginia, Lt. General Wilson retired from active military duty in 1977 after serving 37 years and rising from infantry private to lieutenant general; and

WHEREAS, a highly decorated veteran of World War II, Lt. General Wilson spent part of that war in the Office of Strategic Services (OSS) and later in the 1944 North Burma Campaign with ?Merrill?s Marauders?; and

WHEREAS, following World War II, Lt. General Wilson studied at Columbia University and in Europe as a foreign language and area officer, mastering several languages and becoming a specialist on the Soviet Union; and

WHEREAS, key assignments during Lt. General Wilson?s career include tours in the Central Intelligence Agency in the Clandestine Services; as a group commander in the United States Army Special Forces; assistant commandant, United States Army John F. Kennedy Special Warfare School; deputy assistant to the Secretary of Defense for Special Operations; assistant commander for operations, 82nd Airborne Division; United States defense attach?/Moscow; deputy to the Director of Central Intelligence for the Intelligence Community; and director of the Defense Intelligence Agency; and

WHEREAS, Lt. General Wilson became an adjunct professor of political science at Hampden-Sydney College in 1982 and was appointed the 22nd president of the college in July 1992, retiring in June 2000 as president emeritus and James C. Wheat Visiting Professor of Leadership; and

WHEREAS, Lt. General Wilson has served as military advisor to the Governor of Virginia, as a member of the Governor?s Biracial Advisory Board on Higher Education in Virginia, and as a member of the Virginia Military Advisory Commission; and

WHEREAS, a former member of the Longwood College Board of Visitors, Lt. General Wilson was named in 1992 a Virginia Cultural Laureate for Public Service by the Virginia Cultural Laureate Foundation; and

WHEREAS, throughout his highly distinguished military and civilian careers, Lt. General Wilson has served his community, the Commonwealth, and the nation with great skill, dedication, and devotion; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the Senate, the House of Delegates concurring, That the General Assembly commend an outstanding military and educational leader and outstanding Virginian, Lieutenant General Samuel Vaughan Wilson, USA Ret.; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the Senate prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Lieutenant General Samuel Vaughan Wilson, USA Ret., as an expression of the General Assembly?s respect and gratitude for his service to the nation and Commonwealth.
