WHEREAS, Marvin Gillum was born on February 2, 1924, in Manassas, Virginia, and graduated from Osbourn High School in 1940; and

WHEREAS, Marvin Gillum received a bachelor of science degree in chemistry and pre-med from Virginia Military Institute and received a DDS degree from the Medical College of Virginia School of Dentistry; and

WHEREAS, in 1947, Marvin and his bride, Mardi, came to Manassas, Virginia, where they raised three daughters, Cindy, Debby, and Melanie; they enjoyed 62 years of marriage and became the grandparents of six grandchildren; and

WHEREAS, Dr. Gillum opened a dental practice in Manassas alongside his father, also a dentist, and worked in that profession for 40 years (1947?1987); and

WHEREAS, Dr. Gillum proudly served his country as a captain in the United States Air Force Dental Corps during the Korean War; and

WHEREAS, Dr. Gillum also served as an executive vice president, senior vice president, and member of the board of directors of Scott & Stringfellow; and

WHEREAS, Dr. Gillum generously gave of his time and talents as he served on the Manassas School Board for 15 years, including 10 years as chairman, and as mayor of Manassas for eight years (1996?2004), and Dr. Gillum and his wife were the cheerful Grand Marshals of the Greater Manassas Christmas Parade in 1994; and

WHEREAS, Dr. Gillum was a longtime member and past president of the Rotary Club of Manassas and chairman of the Prince William Health System Foundation; he served as cochairman of the Prince William Health System Capital Campaign; and

WHEREAS, Dr. Gillum was a deacon and trustee of his beloved Manassas Baptist Church; and

WHEREAS, Dr. Gillum was cofounder and commissioner of the Manassas baseball Little League and was director of the Prince William Cannons baseball team; and

WHEREAS, Dr. Gillum was a member of the Manassas Masonic Lodge, the Optimist Club, the Manassas Kiwanis Club, and the Manassas Republican Committee; and

WHEREAS, Dr. Gillum also served as chairman of the board of Piedmont Federal Savings Bank; as honorary chairman of the March of Dimes; as a member of the board of directors of the Prince William Chapter of the American Red Cross; as a member of the George Mason University, Prince William campus advisory board; as former director of the Central Mutual Telephone Company; and as an advisory board member for F & M Bank; and

WHEREAS, Dr. Gillum served as a director of Securing Emergency Resources through Volunteer Efforts (SERVE), was a member of the advisory board of Habitat for Humanity, and was vice chairman of the board of directors of the Manassas Dance Company; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the Senate, the House of Delegates concurring, That the General Assembly note with great sadness the loss of a dedicated public servant, Marvin L. Gillum; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the Senate prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of Marvin L. Gillum as an expression of the General Assembly?s respect for his many contributions to his city, his county, his state, and his country; praise for his outstanding contributions to society; and condolences to his family.
