Commending the Honorable Thomas L. Murphey.

WHEREAS, the Honorable Thomas L. Murphey, the esteemed chief judge of the 12th Judicial District General District Court, will retire on April 1, 2011, after almost 17 years of serving his fellow citizens; and

WHEREAS, Thomas Murphey graduated from Thomas Dale High School, received a bachelor?s degree from Hampden-Sydney College, and earned a law degree from the T.C. Williams School of Law at the University of Richmond; and

WHEREAS, a dedicated attorney, Thomas Murphey began his distinguished career as an associate at Jennings, Beddow, Marley, and Burgess and then advanced to partner at the firm in 1977; and

WHEREAS, Thomas Murphey, as a respected partner, worked diligently on behalf of his clients and also served as former president and secretary/treasurer of the Chesterfield-Colonial Heights Bar Association; and

WHEREAS, in 1994 Thomas Murphey was appointed by the Virginia General Assembly as a General District Court Judge of the 12th Judicial District; and

WHEREAS, a knowledgeable jurist, Judge Murphey has heard a variety of cases and demonstrated great fairness and integrity during his tenure; and

WHEREAS, despite a caseload that increased 51 percent during his term without the addition of new judges, Judge Murphey implemented a court-appointed lawyer training program for the 12th Judicial District; and

WHEREAS, committed to his profession, Judge Murphey generously shared his knowledge and expertise at numerous CLE seminars and delivered presentations for the Supreme Court New Judge Orientation and Judicial Conference programs; and

WHEREAS, Judge Murphey has served the citizens of the Commonwealth and his profession, colleagues, and community with great skill, knowledge, and commitment; and

WHEREAS, Judge Murphey looks forward to continuing to serve the Commonwealth as needed in retirement and pursuing his personal interests of golfing, skiing, and reading; and

WHEREAS, Judge Murphey has been supported in all his endeavors by his loving family, including his wife, Phyllis, and their children Doug, Mike, and Ted; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly commend the Honorable Thomas L. Murphey for his dedication to Virginia?s judicial system, his profession, and the people of Chesterfield County and Colonial Heights; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the Honorable Thomas L. Murphey as an expression of the General Assembly?s gratitude for his commitment to justice and public service.
