Celebrating the life of Robert Andrew Fleming, Jr.

WHEREAS, Robert Andrew Fleming, Jr., a retired United States Navy commander, mortgage banker, and admired community leader, died on October 16, 2010; and

WHEREAS, Robert ?Bob? Fleming was born, along with his identical twin brother, Michael, on June 30, 1920; he was the beloved son of Mary and Robert A. Fleming, Sr., and caring brother to the late Martha; and

WHEREAS, Bob Fleming graduated from what is now High Point University, where he was a star tennis player who consistently ranked number one on the tennis team; he completed graduate work at the Georgetown University School of Foreign Service, American University, and the University of Virginia; and

WHEREAS, Bob Fleming married the love of his life, Cecile, and together they enjoyed 56 years of marriage and raised two daughters, Andrea and Carolyn; and

WHEREAS, a man of high principles and keen intellect, Bob Fleming enjoyed a distinguished career in naval intelligence for 24 years that included travel around the world and receipt of the Joint Service Commendation Medal and the Navy Commendation Medal; and

WHEREAS, during World War II, Bob Fleming proudly served in the Office of Naval Intelligence in Washington, D.C., and in offices in London, Calcutta, Rangoon, and Bangkok; and

WHEREAS, Bob Fleming answered the call to duty again during the Korean War and served in Boston, Massachusetts; Washington, D.C.; Charleston, South Carolina; and Munich and Hamburg, Germany; and

WHEREAS, after more than two decades in service to his country, Bob Fleming retired in 1970 to the Northern Virginia area and began a second career in mortgage banking, retiring again in 1982 as Senior Vice President of the National Bank of Detroit Mortgage Company in Virginia; and

WHEREAS, a respected member of the business community, Bob Fleming served on the board of directors of the Annandale Chamber of Commerce, where he worked diligently to enhance the local business environment; and

WHEREAS, in 1982 Bob Fleming was appointed by Governor Charles S. Robb to serve on an advisory committee to enhance the economic climate for small businesses in Virginia; and

WHEREAS, Bob Fleming joined the Rotary Club of Annandale in 1974 out of a desire to be of service to his community; he served as its president from 1978 to 1979 and as Rotary International Governor of Virginia District 760 from 1986 to 1987; and

WHEREAS, in 1980 Bob Fleming organized and became the first chairman of the Annandale Interservice Council, which promoted activities for the betterment of the community; he also served on the boards of the Salvation Army and American Cancer Society in addition to the finance committee of the YMCA; and

WHEREAS, a humble man of great faith, Bob Fleming served in numerous capacities at Annandale United Methodist Church, including finance committee chairman, stewardship campaign leader, district steward, appointee to Wesley Housing board of directors, member of the men?s club, and usher; and

WHEREAS, after a long and remarkable life, Bob Fleming leaves behind a sterling legacy of service to his family, community, church, and country for others to emulate; and

WHEREAS, a devoted and caring family man, Bob Fleming will be fondly remembered and greatly missed by his loving wife, Cecile; daughters, Andrea and Carolyn, and their wonderful families; his twin brother, Michael; and numerous other family members and friends; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby note with great sadness the loss of a distinguished United States Navy commander, mortgage banker, and beloved community leader, Robert Andrew Fleming, Jr.; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of Robert Andrew Fleming, Jr., as an expression of the General Assembly?s respect for his memory.
