HOUSE JOINT RESOLUTION NO. 598
Commending the Chesterfield Baseball Clubs Inc. Pony All-Star baseball team.

WHEREAS, the Chesterfield Baseball Clubs Inc. All-Star baseball team capped a spectacular season by winning the Pony League 14U World Series before an enthusiastic crowd on August 14, 2010; and

WHEREAS, the team, composed of 14- and 15-year-old players from Chesterfield County, finished its tournament season with a perfect 13 - 0 record under the inspiring leadership of veteran Head Coach Bill Harding; and

WHEREAS, the Chesterfield Baseball Clubs Inc. All-Star baseball team began its championship run by first winning the Pony South Regional Tournament in North Carolina; and

WHEREAS, the team then traveled to Rhode Island, where it defeated the host team, Hagerstown, Maryland, and national power Bergen Beach, New York, to advance to the World Series as the East Zone representative; and

WHEREAS, at the World Series held in Washington, Pennsylvania, Chesterfield Baseball Clubs Inc. defeated South Zone champions Medina Valley, Texas, 14 - 3, and then came back from a 5 - 0 deficit in the bottom of the sixth inning, led by the 33rd Grand Slam in Pony history by Michael Flanagan, to defeat West Zone champion Corona, California, 6 - 5; and

WHEREAS, Chesterfield Baseball Clubs Inc. continued to advance toward the U.S. title by defeating the host team, Washington, Pennsylvania, before demonstrating their strong teamwork and outstanding skill in the U.S. championship winning game by making only the fourth triple play in World Series history; and

WHEREAS, in the exciting world championship showdown, the Chesterfield Baseball Clubs Inc. Pony All-Star baseball team played against West Tokyo, Japan; and

WHEREAS, West Tokyo scored early but the Chesterfield Baseball Club, led by pitcher Michael Day who shut out West Tokyo over the final six innings, came back to dominate the game and take home the Commonwealth?s first Pony League 14U World Series championship title and the first East Zone title since 1977; and

WHEREAS, the entire team ? Keenan ?K.C.? Caldwell, Tyler Davis, Michael Day, Michael Flanagan, Ryan Hall, Trevor Harding, Brad McKay, Derek Murphy, Austin Powell, Jack Riggs, Jordan Staib, Justin White, Phillip Van Keuren, and Hunter Williams ? practiced hard and worked together throughout the season; and

WHEREAS, led by Head Coach Bill Harding and assistant coaches Jeff White and Keith Williams, the Chesterfield Baseball Clubs Inc. Pony All-Star baseball team players received outstanding support and encouragement from their parents and the staff of Chesterfield Baseball Clubs, Inc.; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly commend the Chesterfield Baseball Clubs Inc. Pony All-Star baseball team on winning the Pony League 14U World Series; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Head Coach Bill Harding as an expression of the General Assembly?s congratulations and admiration for the team?s championship performance.
