Celebrating the life of Robert Alton Danley, Jr.

WHEREAS, Robert Alton Danley, Jr., of New Market, a beloved educator, administrator, and retired superintendent of Shenandoah County Public Schools, died on October 12, 2010; and

WHEREAS, a native of Grafton, West Virginia, Robert ?Bob? Danley was born on May 30, 1929, to loving parents Robert Alton and Lois Grinnan Danley and was one of three siblings; and

WHEREAS, a graduate of Washington Irving High School, Bob Danley received a bachelor?s degree from Davis & Elkins College and a master?s degree from the University of West Virginia; he pursued further graduate studies at the University of Virginia and James Madison University; and

WHEREAS, Bob Danley spent his long and remarkably successful career in education with Shenandoah County Public Schools; he began as a teacher and coach before moving into administration; and

WHEREAS, an exemplary administrator admired by his colleagues, Bob Danley served as the principal of Stonewall Jackson and Central High Schools before becoming superintendent of Shenandoah County Public Schools in 1973, a position he held until his retirement in 1986; and

WHEREAS, a passionate leader with a kind heart, Bob Danley loved working with the youth of Shenandoah County; he was an outstanding mentor who inspired the students to excellence in all their endeavors; and

WHEREAS, committed to his profession, Bob Danley also shared his education and expertise with a new generation of teachers when he taught at James Madison University; and

WHEREAS, a proud veteran of the United States Navy, Bob Danley gave of his time and talents in the community as a member of the American Legion and the Veterans of Foreign Wars; and

WHEREAS, Bob Danley was a faithful member of Manor Memorial United Methodist Church, where he served as chairman of the Church Council and sang in the church choir; and

WHEREAS, Bob Danley will be fondly remembered and greatly missed by his wife, Janice; daughters, Patricia, Mary, and Julianna and their families; stepchildren, Stacy and R.J. and their families; and numerous other family members, friends, and admirers; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby note with great sadness the loss of a beloved educator and administrator and outstanding Virginian, Robert Alton Danley, Jr.; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of Robert Alton Danley, Jr., as an expression of the General Assembly?s respect for his memory.
