Celebrating the life of Joseph J. Moraski.

WHEREAS, Joseph J. Moraski, an admired contributor to air traffic control from Alexandria, died on March 4, 2010; and

WHEREAS, a native of Pennsylvania, Joseph Moraski was an active young man who earned the rank of Eagle Scout and was a star centerfielder for the South Side Comrades in the Scranton Baseball Association; and

WHEREAS, a talented track and field athlete, Joseph Moraski won numerous medals including the Novice Northeast Pennsylvania Champion, Olympic Prospect, in the 100-yard dash; the 109th Infantry, Scranton, Pennsylvania, Olympic Prospect, in the 440-yard dash; and the Military Service One Mile Relay Championship at Langley Field; and

WHEREAS, a Master Sergeant, Joseph Moraski proudly served his country in the United States Army Air Corps from 1940 to 1945 as a weather forecaster and air traffic controller; and

WHEREAS, after World War II, Joseph Moraski joined the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), putting his military experience to use as an air traffic controller at National Airport; and

WHEREAS, respected and admired for his contributions, Joseph Moraski rapidly rose through the ranks, becoming an executive at FAA headquarters in Washington, D.C., until his retirement with 30 years of service; and

WHEREAS, with great foresight, Joseph Moraski saw the need for an organization dedicated to aviation and air traffic control and helped form the Air Traffic Control Association; today the association continues to provide a forum for those who work with and develop air traffic control systems; and

WHEREAS, Joseph Moraski received numerous awards and accolades for his distinguished contributions to aviation and air traffic control, including recognition from the Air Traffic Control Association and the Director?s Award from the FAA; and

WHEREAS, in his free time, Joseph Moraski was an amateur radio operator and was an active member of the Alexandria Radio Club; he also volunteered as an announcer at the crew races at Old Dominion Boat Club and enjoyed playing golf, achieving a golfer?s dream of scoring a hole-in-one; and

WHEREAS, a devoted family man, Joseph Moraski will be greatly missed by his loving wife of 65 years, Lillian; children Joseph, Richard, Joan and their wonderful families; and numerous other family members, friends, and admirers; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby note with great sadness the loss of an admired contributor to modern-day aviation and air traffic control, Joseph J. Moraski; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of Joseph J. Moraski as an expression of the General Assembly?s respect for his memory.
