Commending Carl I. Sivertsen.

WHEREAS, Carl I. Sivertsen, a loyal and dedicated public servant, has served the Town of Herndon as a member and chair of the Planning Commission for two decades; and

WHEREAS, a native of New Jersey, Carl Sivertsen moved to Herndon in 1977 and involved himself in his new community, serving as a member and chair of the Board of Zoning Appeals from 1984 to 1990; and

WHEREAS, Carl Sivertsen was first appointed to the Herndon Planning Commission in July 1990, and was reappointed to consecutive terms through August 2010, serving as chair from October 2002 through July 2010; and

WHEREAS, a resourceful and able leader, Carl Sivertsen forged strong relationships with community members as he worked to create a downtown that kept a small town feel while also allowing for increases in population density; and

WHEREAS, Carl Sivertsen played a key role in the development of several Herndon projects, including the 2030 Comprehensive Plan and the Zoning Ordinance Rewrite Project, the design of a downtown complex, the expansion of the public works facility, the development of Haley Smith Park, and the completion of Herndon Parkway; and

WHEREAS, realizing the importance of educating his fellow residents as to the procedures associated with planning, Carl Sivertsen worked with Town of Herndon staff to host a planning seminar that educated citizens about the planning process and has lectured at planning seminars around the country; and

WHEREAS, Carl Sivertsen has also devoted countless hours to serving the community as a coach of the Herndon Optimist Club Girls? Softball Team and as a coach and board member of the Northern Virginia Ice Dogs Hockey Club; and

WHEREAS, an environmental health specialist with the Fairfax County Health Department, Carl Sivertsen received a 2009 Environmental Excellence Award for his community outreach on disease-carrying insects and other environmental health issues; and

WHEREAS, an admired public servant, Carl Sivertsen?s thoughtful guidance and insight in planning matters for the past 20 years has greatly influenced the growth and development of the Town of Herndon; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly commend Carl I. Sivertsen for his distinguished service to the Town of Herndon as a member and chair of the Herndon Planning Commission; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Carl I. Sivertsen as an expression of the General Assembly?s appreciation and admiration for his dedication to the community.
