Celebrating the life of Shawnell Hess.

WHEREAS, Deputy Shawnell Hess, an outstanding law-enforcement officer for the Tazewell County Sheriff?s Office, died in the line of duty on July 23, 2010; and

WHEREAS, a valiant law-enforcement officer, Deputy Hess was responding to a call for assistance when his vehicle left the road, causing fatal injuries; and

WHEREAS, a native of Kentucky, Shawnell ?Shawn? Hess was born on February 6, 1976, to loving parents, Queenie James Hess and the late H.L. Hess; at an early age, he demonstrated an interest in flying that would later develop into a great passion and a business; and

WHEREAS, committed to protecting and serving his fellow residents and enforcing the laws of the Commonwealth, Shawn Hess joined the Tazewell County Sheriff's Department in 2003; and

WHEREAS, Deputy Hess was highly respected by his peers and made valuable contributions to public safety in Tazewell County; and

WHEREAS, a twin engine commercial pilot, Deputy Hess owned and operated Hess Aviation and provided private pilot instruction at Tazewell County Airport; and

WHEREAS, an exemplary law-enforcement professional and valued member of the Tazewell County Sheriff?s Office, Deputy Hess was posthumously promoted to the rank of sergeant; and

WHEREAS, Shawn Hess will be fondly remembered and greatly missed by his mother, Queenie; fiancée, Tanya; and numerous other family members, friends, and fellow officers; and

WHEREAS, the loss of Deputy Hess is tragic not only for his family but also for his fellow law-enforcement officers and the citizens of the Commonwealth, and is a reminder of the great sacrifices made by our police officers and all first responders throughout the Commonwealth and the nation; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby note with great sadness the loss of an exemplary law-enforcement professional from Tazewell County, Deputy Shawnell Hess; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of Deputy Shawnell Hess as an expression of the General Assembly?s respect for his memory.
