Celebrating the life of Turpin A. Saunders, Jr.

 

Agreed to by the House of Delegates, February 26, 2011

 

WHEREAS, Turpin A. Saunders, Jr., of Suffolk, an admired business leader and community supporter, died on February 20, 2011; and

WHEREAS, a graduate of Chuckatuck High School, Turpin ?Al? Saunders completed a machinist apprenticeship at the Norfolk Naval Shipyard and proudly served as an engineer during World War II on board the United States Maritime Commission?s liberty ships; and

WHEREAS, after his exemplary military service, Al Saunders returned home to Suffolk and began a successful business career, serving as a partner at Saunders Supply Company for the next 64 years; and

WHEREAS, an admired leader in the community, Al Saunders was an early supporter and charter member of the Chuckatuck Fire Department and later served as chief; and

WHEREAS, Al Saunders led the effort to build Nansemond-Suffolk Academy, a well-known college preparatory school, and provided guidance and insight as a board member for several years; and

WHEREAS, Al Saunders was also a member of the board of trustees for Richard Bennett Trust, volunteered with Meals on Wheels, and served local residents in various other ways; and

WHEREAS, a man of great faith, Al Saunders was a lifelong member of Oakland Christian Church, where he served his fellow members and the community as a deacon, member of several building committees, former superintendent of the Sunday school, and participant in the church?s many missions; and

WHEREAS, Al Saunders was recognized for his generous civic spirit and numerous contributions to Suffolk with his selection, along with his wife, Georgia, as a First Citizen of Suffolk; and

WHEREAS, predeceased by his wife, Georgia, Al Saunders will be fondly remembered and greatly missed by his children, Mary, Ann, Paul, Douglas, and Kathy and their families; and numerous other family members and friends; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED, That the House of Delegates hereby note with great sadness the loss of a respected business leader and beloved community supporter, Turpin A. Saunders, Jr.; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of Turpin A. Saunders, Jr., as an expression of the House of Delegates? respect for his memory.
