HJ160: Commending Brad Kennedy.
WHEREAS, Brad Kennedy of Fluvanna County is commended for his extraordinary heroism in rescuing a trapped and injured individual from a burning automobile; and
WHEREAS, on the morning of February 21, 2011, Brad Kennedy, the owner of Brad?s Auto Repair Shop, was test driving a customer?s truck when he noticed a car off to the side of the road; and
WHEREAS, the automobile had sustained severe damage to the front and rear from impacts with trees when it had gone off the road, while the engine block and a fallen tree on top of the engine block were on fire; and
WHEREAS, Brad Kennedy quickly pulled over and discovered that the driver was trapped inside the automobile; the force of the impact and the falling tree had compacted the front part of the car and pinned the individual?s leg beneath the steering column; and
WHEREAS, Brad Kennedy managed to pry open the front passenger door and enter the vehicle but could not move the steering column off of the victim?s leg; he then ran back to the truck to grab a shovel and tried unsuccessfully to move the steering column with the shovel; and
WHEREAS, as the fire continued to intensify with smoke filling the interior of the car and the heat causing a front tire to explode, Brad Kennedy managed to maneuver his arm to the driver?s foot, successfully removing the driver?s shoe and working the driver?s leg free from the steering column; and
WHEREAS, meanwhile, other passersby had stopped and gathered near the car; they helped Brad Kennedy pull the victim from the car and carry him to the other side of the road, by which time the entire interior of the car was engulfed in flames; and
WHEREAS, Brad Kennedy?s fortuitous arrival on the scene, quick thinking, and decisive action saved the individual?s life and prevented a horrifying tragedy; and
WHEREAS, a humble man of great courage and fortitude, Brad Kennedy is a worthy recipient of commendation for his remarkable actions; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly commend Brad Kennedy for the heroism he displayed on February 21, 2011; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Brad Kennedy as an expression of the General Assembly?s admiration and appreciation for his commitment to helping someone in need.
