Commending the Brookville High School football team.

 

Agreed to by the House of Delegates, January 20, 2012

WHEREAS, the 2011 Brookville High School football team, from Campbell County, capped an undefeated season by winning the Group AA, Division 3 Virginia High School League state championship; and

WHEREAS, Brookville High School defeated James Monroe High School, 34 - 33, and the victory for the Bees was all the sweeter because the team had twice before played James Monroe High School for state bragging rights, in 1996 and 2008, losing both times; and

WHEREAS, in the 2011 game, the Brookville High School football team had a triumphant come-from-behind win, after seeing a 24 - 7 lead in the second quarter disappear in the second half, when James Monroe High School quickly scored two touchdowns; and

WHEREAS, the tenacious and disciplined Bees did not give up, converting two fourth-down plays during the game-winning drive; one of those efforts was a daring effort on fourth-and-9, which yielded a 14-yard gain and the first down, and the drive then culminated in a 28-yard field goal with 35 seconds remaining; and

WHEREAS, the game, which was played nearby at Liberty University?s Williams Stadium, drew a large and supportive crowd; the Brookville High School fans were jubilant about the victory, which gave the Bees a perfect 14 - 0 record for the season; and

WHEREAS, momentum and drive even came from the sideline as defensive tackle Korren Kirven, who did not play because of a broken ankle, constantly exhorted the Bees to keep focused, reminding them early on that the team?s commanding lead in the first quarter was no reason to relax; and

WHEREAS, the entire Brookville High School team contributed to the victory; also contributing to the team?s championship play were the tireless efforts of the coaching staff and the support of the entire school community; and

WHEREAS, Head Coach Jeff Woody especially savored the hard-fought victory, as he played on Brookville High School?s 1996 team which lost the state championship game to James Monroe High School; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby commend the Brookville High School football team for winning the Virginia High School League, Group AA, Division 3 championship for 2011; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Jeff Woody, head coach of the Brookville High School football team, as an expression of the General Assembly?s congratulations on the team?s outstanding performance.
