Celebrating the life of Joseph Temple Henley, Jr.

WHEREAS, Joseph Temple Henley, Jr., of Crozet, an Albemarle County resident who operated a successful and well-known farm while making numerous civic contributions, died on May 27, 2011; and

WHEREAS, born in Charlottesville, Joseph ?Joe? Henley attended Crozet High School and Fork Union Military Academy before graduating from Virginia Tech and proudly serving his country in the United States Army; and

WHEREAS, following his military service, Joe Henley returned home and eventually took over the family orchard and farm, Henley?s Orchard and Holly Hill Farm, which had been in the family since the early days of the Depression; and

WHEREAS, a progressive farmer and savvy businessman, Joe Henley wisely foresaw the need to diversify and expand his family?s agricultural operations so that the orchard and farm would remain successful and continue to produce a bountiful harvest; and

WHEREAS, widely recognized for his contributions to local agriculture, Joe Henley was honored as the Outstanding Farmer of the Year for Albemarle County in 1961; and

WHEREAS, an active member of the community, Joe Henley served for 16 years on the Albemarle County Board of Supervisors, where he provided sound and thoughtful advice regarding the issues faced by local residents and county government; and

WHEREAS, a 40-year member of the White Hall Ruritan Club, Joe Henley participated in countless events to support and help raise funds for worthy causes in the community; and

WHEREAS, Joe Henley enjoyed worship and service as a lifelong member of Crozet United Methodist Church, where he served as a Sunday school teacher, trustee, pastor-parish relations committee chair, and member of the Men?s Club; and

WHEREAS, a member of the Crozet Sportsman Club, Joe Henley spent a great deal of time outdoors with friends and family as they enjoyed hunting and fishing in scenic Albemarle County; and

WHEREAS, Joe Henley was a founding member of the Tuesday Night Supper Club, which attracted local residents to his orchard?s packing shed for dinners that featured wild game he had caught and for lively discussion; and

WHEREAS, a devoted family man, Joe Henley greatly valued the time he spent with his wife, Joan; children, Joseph, Charles, Tracy, and Temple, and their families; and numerous other family members, friends, and acquaintances; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby note with great sadness the loss of a respected citizen of the Commonwealth, Joseph Temple Henley, Jr.; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of Joseph Temple Henley, Jr., as an expression of the General Assembly?s respect for his memory.
