Commending John Henry Weigel III.

WHEREAS, John Henry Weigel III, director of the Sixth Judicial District Court Service Unit for 32 years, retired on December 31, 2011, after 39 years and five months of exemplary service to the Commonwealth; and

WHEREAS, under John Weigel?s leadership, the Sixth Judicial District Court Service Unit provided exemplary service and support to the children and families coming before the Juvenile and Domestic Relations District Court of the Sixth Judicial District; and

WHEREAS, John Weigel?s vision and innovation resulted in the establishment of such programs as the Emporia Family Violence Prevention program, addressing the needs of victims of domestic violence; the Hopewell JOBS program, providing mentoring and early exposure to employment for area youth; and mediation as a court alternative to parties with child custody matters; and

WHEREAS, a strong belief in the values of collaboration and partnership resulted in John Weigel?s successful efforts to create an alternative Day Reporting Center in Hopewell, a juvenile ASAP program in Prince George County and Hopewell, and Electronic Monitoring and Outreach Detention programs throughout the Sixth Judicial District; and

WHEREAS, the Sixth Judicial District Court Service Unit was the only court service unit in Virginia to be accredited through the American Correctional Association, and John Weigel?s efforts have been noted by the Virginia Department of Juvenile Justice; and

WHEREAS, John Weigel has served his community as well as his state as a member and chair of the Hopewell Library and Appomattox Regional Library Board and the District 19 Community Services Board; he has worked to establish a chapter of America?s Promise in Hopewell and to recognize and commemorate Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.?s, contributions to Hopewell and the civil rights movement; and

WHEREAS, after 39 years of service, John Weigel looks forward to spending time with his family and friends during a well-deserved retirement; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby commend John Henry Weigel III for his exceptional public service on the occasion of his retirement; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to John Henry Weigel III as an expression of the General Assembly?s congratulations and best wishes in his future endeavors.
