HJ361: Commending Stacy Hoeflich.
WHEREAS, Stacy Hoeflich, an outstanding teacher at John Adams Elementary School in Alexandria, was named the 2011 National History Teacher of the Year; and
WHEREAS, the prestigious award that Stacy Hoeflich received honors the nation?s top history teachers; it is sponsored by the History Channel, the Gilder Lehrman Institute of American History, and Preserve America; and
WHEREAS, Stacy Hoeflich, who teaches Virginia Studies to fourth-grade students, comes from a family of educators as her mother was a first-grade teacher and her sister also teaches history; in addition to her work with elementary students, Stacy Hoeflich is a consultant for the Center for History and New Media at George Mason University; and
WHEREAS, Stacy Hoeflich was inspired by her 11th grade Advanced Placement U.S. History teacher; after high school she earned her bachelor?s and master?s degrees from George Mason University and has taught at John Adams Elementary School for 14 years; and
WHEREAS, Stacy Hoeflich?s initiative and creative ideas spark in her pupils a keen interest in history; for example, after taking a course about the life of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, she worked with another teacher to help her students compose and produce operas on George Mason, Thomas Jefferson, and Virginia?s Indians; and
WHEREAS, as many of her students are English Language Learners, Stacy Hoeflich has developed innovative teaching methods, incorporating many visual aids such as maps from four centuries ago and editorial cartoons of the 20th century; and
WHEREAS, Stacy Hoeflich is active in the Organization of American Historians, the American Historical Association, and the National Council for the Social Studies; she has been a presenter at national conferences sponsored by these organizations; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby commend Stacy Hoeflich on being named the 2011 National History Teacher of the Year; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Stacy Hoeflich as an expression of the General Assembly?s congratulations and admiration for her ability to instill in young people an appreciation of and passion for Virginia?s?and the nation?s?history.
