Commending Boy Scout Troop 400.

WHEREAS, Boy Scout Troop 400 was founded as Troop 5 in 1911; and

WHEREAS, Troop 5 was founded at the dawn of the Boy Scouts of America, which began in 1910; and

WHEREAS, the Troop has been continuously sponsored by St. Paul?s Episcopal Church since its inception in 1911; and

WHEREAS, one of Troop 400?s Scouts helped other people during the 1918 Spanish flu pandemic and died as a result; he is memorialized in one of St. Paul?s stained glass windows; and

WHEREAS, the troop changed its name to Troop 700 after the Second World War after the troop went on a brief hiatus while their leaders bravely served overseas in the United States Armed Forces; and

WHEREAS, in 1970 the troop?s designated number was changed to Troop 400; and

WHEREAS, over its 100 years of existence, approximately 300 scouts have become Eagle Scouts; and

WHEREAS, Troop 400?s Eagle Scouts have included citizens who have served the Commonwealth and the nation, at home and abroad; and

WHEREAS, Troop 400 graduates have a record of distinguished service which includes major contributions to the military and to the economic and cultural life of the Commonwealth and the nation; and

WHEREAS, Troop 400 is still active and organizes a once-a-month outdoor experience, regardless of the weather; and

WHEREAS, Boy Scout Troop 400 continues to produce excellent citizens under the leadership of Tony Smith, Scoutmaster; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly commend and congratulate the Scouts of Troop 400, Scoutmaster Tony Smith, and the Troop Committee for their excellent contributions to the Richmond metropolitan region, the Commonwealth, and beyond; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Boy Scout Troop 400 as an expression of the General Assembly?s appreciation for their dedication to service and self-betterment.
