Celebrating the life of Ivan Benton McEachin, Jr.

WHEREAS, Ivan Benton McEachin, Jr., grandson of Archie McEachin, a former slave, and the eldest child and only son of Dr. Ivan B. McEachin, Sr., and Ester McEachin, was born in Newport News on May 4, 1928, and passed away November 16, 2011; and

WHEREAS, Ivan Benton McEachin, Jr., was a graduate of Huntington High School and Virginia Union University; and

WHEREAS, a brave patriot, Ivan Benton McEachin, Jr., enlisted in the United States Army Air Corps in 1946 with his dear friend Arthur Gregg; he was stationed in many places throughout the United States and abroad in Germany and Italy; during the Korean War, he served as an artillery officer; when the Army Air Corps was reorganized as separate armed services, he remained in the United States Army, and after more than 20 years of outstanding service to his country, he ended his career in the United States Army with an honorable discharge in 1968; and

WHEREAS, Ivan Benton McEachin, Jr., was employed by C&P Telephone Company after his retirement from military service; he loved working in his civilian position and was highly respected by his coworkers; he retired from Bell Atlantic in the 1980s; and

WHEREAS, Ivan Benton McEachin, Jr., was a man of faith, and he worshipped with his family at St. Philip?s Episcopal Church, with which the family has enjoyed a long relationship since the 1940s and where he served as a member of the vestry board; and

WHEREAS, Ivan Benton McEachin, Jr., affectionately called ?Sandy,? was a devoted family man who was proud of his sons and their families; he was always blissfully happy when surrounded by his family and friends; he enjoyed a good poker game and loved fishing; and as an assistant Scoutmaster, he taught many young boys to love and appreciate fishing as he did; and

WHEREAS, Ivan Benton McEachin, Jr., leaves to mourn his loss a devoted wife and family and many friends, who are comforted by fond memories of loving times spent with him and his legacy of faith, strength, devotion, and family; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby note with great sadness the loss of Ivan Benton McEachin, Jr.; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of Ivan Benton McEachin, Jr., as an expression of the General Assembly?s respect for his memory.
