Commending the Mount Vernon Athletic Club.

 

Agreed to by the House of Delegates, March 27, 2012

 

WHEREAS, the Mount Vernon Athletic Club, owned and operated by Van Metre Companies, celebrates 40 years of serving the Mount Vernon-Lee community in 2012; and

WHEREAS, A.G. Van Metre, Sr., the founder of Van Metre Companies and a passionate fitness and tennis fan, purchased the Mount Vernon Athletic Club with the goal of providing a community gathering place where local families could enjoy the sport of tennis and take advantage of an array of wellness programs and services; and

WHEREAS, the Mount Vernon Athletic Club, a 50,000-square-foot facility, houses five indoor tennis courts, one racquetball court, a fitness center staffed by expert certified personal trainers and a nutritional practitioner, a full-service wellness spa and massage center, and corporate outreach and wellness programs; and

WHEREAS, the Mount Vernon Athletic Club?s outstanding Junior High Performance program serves as a springboard for area and national rankings and contributed to the club?s designation by the United States Tennis Association (USTA) as the 2011 Mid-Atlantic Tennis Facility of the Year; and

WHEREAS, Tim Bainton, who leads the Mount Vernon Athletic Club?s tennis program, earned the 2011 USTA Virginia Teaching Pro of the Year Award, while the club?s tennis professional, Patrick Escalambre, was recognized as the 2011 USTA Virginia Tournament Director of the Year; and

WHEREAS, the Mount Vernon Athletic Club also partners with community organizations to promote health and fitness among local residents of all ages; and

WHEREAS, the Mount Vernon Athletic Club worked with the Fairfax County Fire and Rescue Department for a Community Fun Run that helped raise awareness of childhood obesity, with 30 area children receiving free, donated athletic equipment, sneakers, and backpacks filled with school supplies; and

WHEREAS, the Mount Vernon Athletic Club also sends staff members to participate in annual Turkey Trot races sponsored by Mount Vernon High School and Hollin Meadows Science and Math  Focus School; and

WHEREAS, the Mount Vernon Athletic Club holds a popular, annual Swing for Pink charity fundraiser, founded by owner Joan Van Metre, that has raised in excess of $71,000 since 2006 to benefit breast cancer research, education, screening, and treatment at such institutions as the Breast Care Institute at Inova Mount Vernon Hospital and Inova Alexandria Hospital Cancer Center; and

WHEREAS, the Mount Vernon Athletic Club has also partnered with the Inova pulmonary rehabilitation program; through corporate memberships, discount memberships to worthy community partners, such as Alternative Paths Training School, are available; and

WHEREAS, in recent years, the Mount Vernon Athletic Club has worked to conserve energy and resources with a recycling program, a water conservation program, high efficiency indoor and outdoor lighting, and an overhaul of its HVAC units; and

WHEREAS, the Mount Vernon Athletic Club remains committed to being a vital part of the community, providing outstanding service to its members and reaching out to the local community; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, That the Mount Vernon Athletic Club hereby be commended on the occasion of its 40th anniversary; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the Mount Vernon Athletic Club as an expression of the House of Delegates? congratulations and appreciation for the club?s efforts to promote the enjoyment of the sport of tennis and healthy living.
