Commending Sterling Elementary School.

 

Agreed to by the House of Delegates, April 17, 2012

 

WHEREAS, Sterling Elementary School proudly celebrates 48 years of serving the families of Sterling in Loudoun County in 2012; and

WHEREAS, construction of the Sterling Park subdivision began in 1963 and as eastern Loudoun County?s first subdivision grew and more families moved in, Sterling Elementary School was built in 1964; and

WHEREAS, Sterling Elementary School believes teaching is a collaborative commitment in which the lives of students are positively influenced in a nurturing environment by respecting their differences, facilitating learning, encouraging growth, and discovering ways to give each child a bright, successful future; and

WHEREAS, all students are encouraged and supported to reach their academic potential as parents, community members, and staff work collaboratively to ensure a child-centered environment that encourages students to become lifelong learners and productive members of society; and

WHEREAS, on March 9, 2012, Sterling Elementary School held a Multicultural Day on which students learned about different countries and cultures while completing crafts and getting a stamp for their ?passport?; the school also held a Multicultural Day Fashion Show where students wore traditional clothing from their native cultures and modeled them for the school; and

WHEREAS, in May of 2010, a fifth-grader at Sterling Elementary School was chosen as AAA?s Outstanding Safety Patrol of the Year for Loudoun County; and

WHEREAS, Sterling Elementary School strives to incorporate technology across the curriculum, with students engaging in a variety of technology-rich learning activities; and

WHEREAS, classroom teachers at Sterling Elementary School use their four classroom computers, the computer lab, laptops, Alphasmart keyboards, and other technology-related devices in all content areas, while the technology resource teacher and technology assistant help teachers with lesson research, planning, and delivery; and

WHEREAS, the Sterling Elementary School physical education program strives to instill in students the habits and activities to lead healthy and physically fit lives while emphasizing sportsmanship, leadership, and performing at one?s best; and

WHEREAS, Harlem Globetrotter ?Handles? Franklin came to Sterling Elementary School and spoke to students at an assembly about C.H.E.E.R.?Cooperation, Healthy Habits, Effort, Enthusiasm, and Responsibility; and

WHEREAS, the Sterling Elementary School art program is centered around experience in a wide variety of media, integration of art and the regular classroom curriculum, study of art forms from diverse cultures, and study of art history, including masters and how their work related to other artwork of their time and culture; and

WHEREAS, Redskins tight end Chris Cooley visited Sterling fifth graders to demonstrate his skills with a pottery wheel; after giving a brief history of pottery as an art form, he showed students how to use a wheel to transform a lump of clay into a work of art; and

WHEREAS, in 2010 students from Sterling Elementary School participated in the Loudoun County Public Schools Art Festival, where their art was on display in the Loudoun County School Administration building; and

WHEREAS, Sterling Elementary School looks forward to continuing to provide its students with a superior education to enable them to excel in their future endeavors; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, That Sterling Elementary School hereby be commended on the occasion of its 48th anniversary; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Teri Finn, principal of Sterling Elementary School, as an expression of the House of Delegates? congratulations and admiration for the school?s commitment to its students.
