Celebrating the life of Kathleen Nunn Walker.

WHEREAS, Kathleen Nunn Walker, the first woman elected to serve on the Clarksville Town Council and the first female mayor of Clarksville, died on February 3, 2012, three months before her 100th birthday; and

WHEREAS, before entering public service, Mecklenburg County native Kathleen Walker was a successful small businesswoman; she was the owner of Dutchie?s Beauty Shop, and she and her twin sister, Pauleen, operated The Twin Shop; and

WHEREAS, during her lifetime, Kathleen Walker sold encyclopedias and worked at Brentwood Manor Furniture Store; she was interested in journalism and wrote for the Richmond News Leader and the Mecklenburg Sun newspapers; and

WHEREAS, Kathleen Walker?s involvement in local politics began in 1986 when she became the first woman to be elected to the Clarksville Town Council; four years later, in 1990, she was elected the first female mayor of the lakefront town, a post she held for six years; and

WHEREAS, community service was important to Kathleen Walker; she served on the board of the Clarksville Area Public Library and was active in civic work as a Worthy Matron of the Clarksville Chapter 145 of the Order of the Eastern Star; and

WHEREAS, in recognition of her many years of community and public service, Kathleen Walker was voted Citizen of the Year by the Clarksville Lake Country Chamber of Commerce in 1990; and

WHEREAS, the Chamber of Commerce acknowledged Kathleen Walker?s many contributions to the betterment of the Clarksville area by awarding her a Lifetime Achievement Award in 1993; the group later renamed this prestigious honor the ?Kathleen Walker Lifetime Achievement Award?; and

WHEREAS, Kathleen Walker will be lovingly remembered by her children, Grace and Ted, and their families and by many other family members, friends, and the people of Clarksville; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the Senate, the House of Delegates concurring, That the General Assembly hereby note with great sadness the loss of a dedicated and admired public servant, Kathleen Nunn Walker; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the Senate prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of Kathleen Nunn Walker as an expression of the General Assembly?s respect for her memory and appreciation for her many accomplishments.
