Celebrating the life of Robert Alfred Heinz.

WHEREAS, Robert Alfred Heinz of Midlothian, the admired dean of the School of Business and Engineering at J. Sargeant Reynolds Community College, died on September 28, 2011; and

WHEREAS, a man of tremendous intellect, Robert ?Bob? Heinz earned a bachelor?s and master?s degree from Lehigh University, where he met his wife, and earned a doctoral degree in electrical engineering at Carnegie Mellon University; and

WHEREAS, Dr. Heinz enjoyed a successful career in manufacturing at Bell Labs, Western Electric Company, AT&T, Lucent Technologies, and Viasystems, providing outstanding leadership and technical knowledge to help the companies achieve their goals; and

WHEREAS, in 1997, Dr. Heinz joined the faculty of Virginia Commonwealth University, playing a pivotal role in the formation of the University?s School of Engineering and serving as the School?s Associate Dean for Industrial Affairs; and

WHEREAS, in 2000, Dr. Heinz joined J. Sargeant Reynolds Community College as dean of the School of Business and Engineering, where he inspired students, passionately advocated for automobile safety, and fostered a positive working environment; and

WHEREAS, Dr. Heinz worked diligently to enhance J. Sargeant Reynolds Community College?s reputation as a leader in automotive education, which resulted in the award of grants from the National Science Foundation and United States Department of Energy to develop new courses; and

WHEREAS, an enthusiastic motivator, Dr. Heinz founded the Learning Environment Awards Program at J. Sargeant Reynolds Community College for faculty and staff to recognize fellow employees; and

WHEREAS, Dr. Heinz published several papers over the course of his distinguished career, held three patents, provided valuable insight as a member of the board of directors of the Science Museum of Virginia, and volunteered with the Engineering Coalition of Schools for Excellence in Education and Leadership; and

WHEREAS, in his free time, Dr. Heinz took an active role in his church and many community organizations while supporting his children and grandchildren in their activities; and

WHEREAS, a devoted family man, Bob Heinz will be fondly remembered and greatly missed by his wife, Eleanor; three children, Laura, Kristin, and Eric, and their families; his students and colleagues; and numerous other family members and friends; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the Senate, the House of Delegates concurring, That the General Assembly hereby note with great sadness the loss of an admired educator and leader, Robert Alfred Heinz; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the Senate prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of Robert Alfred Heinz as an expression of the General Assembly?s respect for his memory.
