HOUSE JOINT RESOLUTION NO. 716
Commending Camden Dellinger.

WHEREAS, Camden Dellinger of Grottoes, an outstanding member of Boy Scout Troop 28, is commended for using his Boy Scout training to help save his father’s life; and

WHEREAS, on July 31, 2011, Camden Dellinger and his family returned from church, and Camden’s father began work to replace an axle on the family car; and

WHEREAS, Camden Dellinger and his family heard a loud crash from the garage and discovered to their horror that Michael Dellinger was pinned under the vehicle; and

WHEREAS, a quick-thinking young man, Camden Dellinger drew upon his training as a Boy Scout, remaining calm, dialing 911, and ascertaining that his father was still breathing; and

WHEREAS, Camden Dellinger and his mother, Kimberly, then attempted to move the heavy vehicle off of Michael Dellinger; and

WHEREAS, Camden Dellinger and his mother were able to finally lift the vehicle so that Michael Dellinger could crawl out, but Kimberly Dellinger fractured a vertebra in the attempt; and

WHEREAS, Camden Dellinger then provided basic first aid to both of his parents, keeping them from moving further and helping keep them calm while awaiting paramedics; and

WHEREAS, both of his parents made full recoveries, and for his heroic actions, Camden Dellinger received the national Heroism Award from the Boy Scouts of America at a special ceremony at Massanutten Presbyterian Church, where his troop meets; and

WHEREAS, the prestigious award, given to only 3,400 individuals since its inception in 1923, recognizes those who demonstrate heroism and skill in saving a life; and

WHEREAS, Camden Dellinger’s brave actions reflected the Boy Scout motto of “Be Prepared” when he was faced with a crisis; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby commend Camden Dellinger for his heroic efforts to save his father on July 31, 2011; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Camden Dellinger as an expression of the General Assembly’s admiration for his quick thinking, calm manner, and decisive action in an emergency.
