WHEREAS, Horace E. Meyers of Victoria was honored by French President François Hollande for his heroic actions to defend France during World War II with appointment as a Chevalier in the National Order of the Legion of Honor; and

WHEREAS, the Legion of Honor, created by Napoleon Bonaparte in 1802, acknowledges services rendered to France by persons of exceptional merit; and

WHEREAS, in 1939, as the world descended into chaos with the advent of World War II, Horace Meyers joined the Kentucky National Guard; two years later, he was part of a convoy en route to Manila, Philippines, when the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor; and

WHEREAS, the convoy returned to the United States and Horace Meyers was selected to attend Officer Candidate School in Fort Sill, Oklahoma; and

WHEREAS, a respected leader, Horace Meyers then trained members of the new 70th Infantry Division stationed at Camp Adair, Oregon, for overseas service; and

WHEREAS, Horace Meyers served as executive officer of C Battery, 882nd Field Artillery Battalion, 70th Infantry Division and courageously led American troops during four campaigns; and

WHEREAS, an inspiration to his fellow soldiers, Horace Meyers spent a month in a hospital recovering from injuries sustained from an exploding hand grenade and then returned to duty to advance the Allied cause; and

WHEREAS, Horace Meyers also reenlisted at the conclusion of the war and continued to faithfully serve his country in Manila with the 738th M.P. Battalion; and

WHEREAS, after the war, Horace Meyers returned to the United States, settled in Virginia, and raised his family while working as a salesman and serving his community, including 16 years as a member of the Town Council of Victoria; and

WHEREAS, Horace Meyers has continued to honor the memory of his fallen comrades and serve his fellow veterans as quartermaster of VFW Post 9954 for more than half of a century; and

WHEREAS, the title of Chevalier in the National Order of the Legion of Honor “is a sign of France’s infinite gratitude and appreciation” for Horace Meyers’ “contribution to the United States’ decisive role in the liberation of France during World War II”; and

WHEREAS, a heroic Virginian, Horace Meyers epitomizes the strength, resolve, and bravery of the members of the United States Armed Forces, who proudly serve at home and abroad during times of peace and war; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby commend Horace E. Meyers on his appointment as a Chevalier in the National Order of the Legion of Honor by the French government; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Horace E. Meyers as an expression of the General Assembly’s congratulations and admiration for his heroic actions and extraordinary bravery during World War II.
