Commending Stan Smith.

WHEREAS, Stan Smith, chair of the Smith Mountain Lake Association’s Water Quality Monitoring program and vice chair of the Tri-County Lake Administrative Commission, has served the communities surrounding Smith Mountain Lake by ensuring the environmental health of the lake; and

WHEREAS, the Smith Mountain Lake Association (SMLA) and Ferrum College formed the Water Quality Monitoring program to study the health of the lake by examining water samples from 77 locations, including main channels and tributaries; and

WHEREAS, under Stan Smith’s exemplary leadership, the Water Quality Monitoring program has raised community awareness of the lake’s importance, ensured that lake waters remain healthy, and expanded learning opportunities for Ferrum College students and volunteers; and

WHEREAS, due to the efforts of the Water Quality Monitoring program, the SMLA, Ferrum College, and the Virginia Department of Environmental Quality have cooperatively established a program to protect water quality; and

WHEREAS, Stan Smith has written several grant requests and secured funding to continue the important work carried out by the SMLA; and

WHEREAS, Stan Smith negotiated with the Virginia Department of Health on a project to secure a pump-out boat, allowing other boaters to avoid discharging waste into the lake; and

WHEREAS, also taking on a variety of other roles, Stan Smith helped to manage one of SMLA’s volunteer programs, organized the volunteer appreciation picnic, serves on the steering committee of the Shoreline Management Plan, and recently became the ombudsman of the SMLA; and

WHEREAS, Stan Smith worked as the SMLA representative to the Tri-County Lake Administrative Commission (TLAC), an organization devoted to building a harmonious community at the lake, and joined the TLAC board in 2000; and

WHEREAS, as chair of the TLAC board from 2001 to 2003, Stan Smith oversaw the treatment for an invasive type of aquatic vegetation in Smith Mountain Lake; he is currently the vice chair of the board and the chair of the Navigation Committee; and

WHEREAS, Stan Smith’s efforts have allowed Smith Mountain Lake to continue to age gracefully and ensured that surrounding communities will be able to enjoy the lake for generations to come; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby commend Stan Smith for his work with the Smith Mountain Lake Association’s Water Quality Monitoring program and the Tri-County Lake Administrative Commission; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Stan Smith as an expression of the General Assembly’s admiration for his tireless dedication to Smith Mountain Lake and service to the surrounding communities.
