HJ833: Celebrating the life of Mary Louise Williams McGlothlin.
WHEREAS, Mary Louise Williams McGlothlin, the matriarch of a large and loving family, a gifted educator, and a dedicated community supporter from Grundy, died on January 1, 2013; and
WHEREAS, from an early age, Mary McGlothlin understood the value of education and seamlessly wove together family responsibilities, study, and a professional career in education throughout her adult life; and
WHEREAS, Mary McGlothlin worked to put herself through Sullins College in Bristol, Tennessee, and married the love of her life, Donald; the couple decided to relocate to Williamsburg with their children to further their educations; and
WHEREAS, Mary McGlothlin earned a bachelor’s degree from The College of William and Mary and obtained her teaching credentials while also raising her family of five children; and
WHEREAS, the couple moved to Grundy and Mary McGlothlin began her teaching career at Grundy Senior High School; and
WHEREAS, a creative and compassionate teacher, Mary McGlothlin taught English literature and ignited students’ imaginations by having them use the fine arts to depict different periods of literature; and
WHEREAS, a gifted vocalist, song writer, and pianist, Mary McGlothlin also directed the school’s choirs, drama productions, and Glee Club while privately giving music and voice lessons; and
WHEREAS, desirous to be of further service to students, Mary McGlothlin returned to school to gain credentials as a guidance counselor and then provided a listening ear and wise words to help students make important school, career, and life decisions; and
WHEREAS, Mary McGlothlin went on to earn a master’s degree from Radford University and became Buchanan County’s first female high school principal; and
WHEREAS, known for her common sense approach, Mary McGlothlin fostered a positive learning environment in which all students could thrive; and
WHEREAS, Mary McGlothlin also took an active role in community affairs as a trustee for the Buchanan County Public Library, Worthy Matron of the Florence Ann Chapter of the Order of the Eastern Star, and staunch advocate for efforts to bring the fine arts to Buchanan County; and
WHEREAS, in addition to her many professional and community endeavors, Mary McGlothlin graciously supported her husband, Donald McGlothlin, Sr., during his more than two decades of service to the Commonwealth as a member of the Virginia House of Delegates; and
WHEREAS, a remarkable woman, Mary McGlothlin touched the lives of countless individuals over the course of her long and well-lived life, which was dedicated to the service of others; and
WHEREAS, predeceased by her husband, Donald, and son, Sean, Mary McGlothlin will be fondly remembered and greatly missed by her children, Donald, Mary, Leah, and Kevin, and their families; and many other family members, friends, and former students; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby note with great sadness the loss of a beloved citizen of Buchanan County and the Commonwealth, Mary Louise Williams McGlothlin; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of Mary Louise Williams McGlothlin as an expression of the General Assembly’s respect for her memory.
