HJ894: Commending the Leesburg Volunteer Fire Company.
WHEREAS, the Leesburg Volunteer Fire Company celebrates 210 years of safeguarding the Leesburg community in 2013; and
WHEREAS, in 1803 the people of the Town of Leesburg agreed to form a fire company in the form of a bucket brigade team; and
WHEREAS, later in the 1800s, the bucket brigade team reorganized into the Leesburg Fire Company; each member of the team was issued two leather buckets and instructed on how to maintain his equipment until called for; and
WHEREAS, growing significantly in the 1920s, the Leesburg Fire Company increased its maximum membership, purchased several new trucks, replaced the alarm bell with a siren, and built a new fire station; and
WHEREAS, the Leesburg Fire Company was highly visible during the 1920s, hosting fundraisers in the community and marching in the Firemen’s and Policemen’s Parade in Washington, D.C.; and
WHEREAS, in 1928 the Leesburg Fire Company responded to 21 calls and spent a total of 36 hours on calls; and
WHEREAS, over the next several decades, the Leesburg Fire Company continued to expand, modernizing equipment and increasing membership to better serve the growing community; and
WHEREAS, by the 1970s, the Leesburg Fire Company was averaging 300 calls a year; to serve the public more effectively, the company hired its first fire marshal/coordinator and commenced emergency rescue operations; and
WHEREAS, today, the volunteer and career firefighters of the Leesburg Fire Company, now known as the Leesburg Volunteer Fire Company, use advanced training and the highest-quality equipment to provide fire suppression, fire prevention, emergency rescue services, and fire safety education; and
WHEREAS, in 2012 the Leesburg Volunteer Fire Company received 1,723 calls and dedicated countless hours to protecting the community; and
WHEREAS, the members of the Leesburg Volunteer Fire Company embody the integrity, dedication, and bravery demonstrated by firefighters and first responders throughout the Commonwealth; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby commend the Leesburg Volunteer Fire Company on the occasion of its 210th anniversary; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the Leesburg Volunteer Fire Company as an expression of the General Assembly’s admiration for the company’s long tradition of dedicated service to the community.
