Commending the Blacksburg High School girls' cross country team.

WHEREAS, the Blacksburg High School girls’ cross country team won the 2012 Virginia High School League Group AA state cross country tournament for the second year in a row; and

WHEREAS, the Blacksburg High School Bruins faced runners from 15 other high school teams at the Great Meadows course in The Plains; and

WHEREAS, displaying focus and toughness, the Blacksburg Bruins won by over 40 points and authoritatively secured their fifth state cross country title in eight years; and

WHEREAS, sophomore Bonnie Angermeier ranked highest for the Blacksburg Bruins, finishing in third place and recording a time of 18:31 after a dramatic sprint to the finish line; senior Rachel McCoy finished eighth to earn all-state honors; and

WHEREAS, the other members of the team—sophomore Emily Beatty, sophomore Jenn Fleming, junior Claire Ewing-Nelson, junior Kathryn Benson, and sophomore Sabrina Yamaguchi—also contributed to the victory; and

WHEREAS, with the boys’ cross country team also recording a win, the Blacksburg High School teams swept the state cross country tournament for the second year in a row; and

WHEREAS, the team’s outstanding victory is due to the hard work of the players, the devoted leadership of the coaching staff, and the support of the students, administration, and fans of Blacksburg High School; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby commend the Blacksburg High School girls’ cross country team on winning the Virginia High School League Group AA state cross country tournament for the second year in a row; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to James DeMarco, head coach of the Blacksburg High School girls’ cross country team, as an expression of the General Assembly’s admiration for the team’s focus, determination, and skill.
