Commending Captain Florent Groberg.

WHEREAS, United States Army Captain Florent Groberg, of McLean, saved the lives of several fellow soldiers during a mission in Afghanistan; and

WHEREAS, Florent Groberg earned varsity letters in cross country and track at Walter Johnson High School in Bethesda, Maryland; and

WHEREAS, attending the University of Maryland at College Park, Florent Groberg continued to achieve success in track and field and graduated with a bachelor’s degree in 2006; and

WHEREAS, relocating to the Commonwealth after college, Florent Groberg became an account executive for iCore Networks in McLean; and

WHEREAS, driven by a strong sense of patriotism, Florent Groberg decided to serve his country by enlisting in the United States Army in 2008; and

WHEREAS, serving two tours in Afghanistan, Captain Groberg attended Officer Candidate School and later held several positions, including platoon leader and executive officer in charge of logistics; and

WHEREAS, Captain Groberg was selected to head the personal security detachment for a brigade commander, an officer in charge of approximately 5,000 soldiers; and

WHEREAS, while in transit to a high-level meeting, Captain Groberg identified a suicide bomber, whom he believed was targeting the brigade commander; and

WHEREAS, Captain Groberg led the highly trained security detail in eliminating the threat; and

WHEREAS, sustaining injuries to his leg in the engagement, Captain Groberg was able to save the life of the commander and many of the men on the detail; and

WHEREAS, for his outstanding military career and courageous efforts on his most recent tour, Captain Groberg received the Army Achievement Medal and the Bronze Star from the United States Army; and

WHEREAS, Captain Groberg exemplifies the patriotism, bravery under pressure, and willingness to sacrifice displayed by all officers and enlisted personnel in the United States Armed Forces; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby commend Captain Florent Groberg for his heroic, life-saving actions during a mission in Afghanistan; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Captain Florent Groberg as an expression of the General Assembly’s admiration for his patriotism and selflessness in the defense of others.
