Commending the Fauquier County Sheriff's Office.

WHEREAS, the Fauquier County Sheriff’s Office is commended for its diligent efforts to investigate a 32-year-old murder case; and

WHEREAS, on December 31, 1980, Brad Baker, a resident of The Plains, was found shot several times; and

WHEREAS, Brad Baker was airlifted to the Washington Hospital Center, where he died from his injuries on January 1, 1981; and

WHEREAS, the Fauquier County Sheriff’s Office pursued several leads; however, no suspect was charged with the crime; and

WHEREAS, in 2005 newly elected Sheriff Charlie Ray Fox, Jr., asked detectives in the Criminal Investigation Division to review their unsolved murders; and

WHEREAS, the Fauquier County Sheriff’s Office worked closely with Commonwealth’s Attorney James Fisher, who impaneled a special grand jury to investigate the case; and

WHEREAS, testimony received before the special grand jury led to a confession, bringing long-awaited relief to family members of Brad Baker; and

WHEREAS, the Fauquier County Sheriff’s Office demonstrated great perseverance, hard work, and commitment to justice as it investigated a murder that occurred more than three decades ago; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby commend the Fauquier County Sheriff’s Office for its work to investigate a 32-year-old murder case; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the Fauquier County Sheriff’s Office as an expression of the General Assembly’s congratulations and admiration for the office’s commitment to justice.
