HOUSE RESOLUTION NO. 160
Commending Big Brothers Big Sisters of Winchester, Frederick & Clarke Counties.

 

Agreed to by the House of Delegates, February 15, 2013

 

WHEREAS, Big Brothers Big Sisters of Winchester, Frederick & Clarke Counties celebrates 40 years of successfully mentoring area youth in 2013; and

WHEREAS, founded in 1973, Big Brothers Big Sisters of Winchester, Frederick & Clarke Counties (BBBS) originally served the Counties of Winchester and Frederick and expanded to serve Clarke County in 1984; and

WHEREAS, growing considerably since 1973, when the organization served only 13 boys, the BBBS served 87 children in 2012, a 38 percent increase over 2011; and

WHEREAS, a chapter of Big Brothers Big Sisters of America, the largest nonprofit mentoring organization of its kind, BBBS provides mentoring services to children facing adversity, building one-on-one relationships between adult mentors, “Bigs,” and children, “Littles”; and

WHEREAS, working primarily with children in single-parent homes, low-income homes, or homes where one parent is incarcerated, BBBS strives to provide each child with a role model, mentor, and friend; and

WHEREAS, with professional support and monitoring from BBBS, volunteer “Bigs” create meaningful connections and provide a positive influence to change the lives of their “Littles” for the better; and

WHEREAS, the mentors at BBBS have helped many children build confidence in themselves, stay in school and achieve higher grades, avoid drugs and alcohol, and refrain from violent behavior; and

WHEREAS, active in the community, BBBS partners with organizations throughout the Counties of Winchester, Frederick, and Clarke to sponsor events and provide opportunities for children in the program; and

WHEREAS, BBBS owes much of its success to the many dedicated volunteers and generous donors who have supported the organization over the years; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, That Big Brothers Big Sisters of Winchester, Frederick & Clarke Counties hereby be commended on the occasion of its 40th anniversary; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Big Brothers Big Sisters of Winchester, Frederick & Clarke Counties as an expression of the House of Delegates’ admiration for the organization’s dedication to helping area youth overcome adversity and achieve success in their lives.
