Commending the Brain Injury Association of Virginia.

WHEREAS, there are an estimated 190,000 Virginians who are disabled as a result of traumatic brain injury and stroke, and annually over 28,000 Virginians are hospitalized because of a traumatic brain injury; and

WHEREAS, brain injury is an issue that extends across the lifespan and occurs as a result of concussions, roadside bombs and blasts, falls, motor vehicle accidents, and assaults; and

WHEREAS, the Brain Injury Association of Virginia was founded in 1983 by family members of brain injury survivors to help these individuals and their families as they struggle to understand and face the aftermath of the injury; and

WHEREAS, the Brain Injury Association of Virginia is the only statewide nonprofit exclusively dedicated to serving the brain injury community; and

WHEREAS, the Brain Injury Association of Virginia has displayed advocacy leadership that has improved the system of care for those affected by brain injury; and

WHEREAS, the Brain Injury Association of Virginia is the primary source of information and personal support in Virginia for thousands of individuals, families, and professionals whose lives have been touched by a life-altering, often devastating, brain injury; and

WHEREAS, the Brain Injury Association of Virginia has assisted more than 300,000 Virginians since its inception, and served a record 30,000 people in 2012; and

WHEREAS, the Brain Injury Association of Virginia provides help, hope, and healing to Virginians affected by brain injury through education, outreach, public awareness, and advocacy; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the Senate, the House of Delegates concurring, That the General Assembly hereby commend the Brain Injury Association of Virginia on the occasion of its 30th anniversary; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the Senate prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the Brain Injury Association of Virginia as an expression of the General Assembly’s congratulations and admiration for the organization’s commitment to helping others.
