SJ314: Commending Dominion Resources, Inc.
WHEREAS, Dominion Resources, Inc., and its employees provided invaluable assistance to Virginians and those in the Northeast in the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy, which struck the East Coast over the course of several days at the end of October 2012; and
WHEREAS, Hurricane Sandy, commonly referred to as “Superstorm Sandy,” impacted approximately 8.5 million utility customers across 21 states as its strong winds and driving rain caused extensive damage; and
WHEREAS, Dominion Virginia Power employees restored electric service to more than 320,000 Dominion Virginia Power customers then sent the largest mutual aid contingent in its 100-year history to the Northeast; and
WHEREAS, mutual assistance, an essential part of electric utility continuity planning, allows a utility to temporarily increase the size of its workforce by calling on line workers from other utilities; and
WHEREAS, in the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy, approximately 80 utilities and more than 53,000 utility workers from as far away as Canada, California, and Washington state assisted in recovery efforts; and
WHEREAS, Dominion Virginia Power sent 338 line and support crew, 688 contractors, and 209 vehicles, while Dominion East Ohio sent 25 employees; and
WHEREAS, employees sent included line and network crews, patrollers, supply chain personnel, and supervisors; and
WHEREAS, Dominion crews worked with ConEd, Jersey Central Power and Light, and New Jersey Natural Gas while its contractors assisted First Energy, PPL, PSEG, ConEd, and Long Island Power Authority; and
WHEREAS, Dominion Resources, Inc., provided 12–13 days of mutual assistance; crews returned home in waves with all crew members back at home by November 13; and
WHEREAS, Dominion Resources, Inc., crew members traveled into hazardous conditions and spent days away from their own families in order to provide much needed assistance to those hard hit by Hurricane Sandy; and
WHEREAS, countless Virginians and grateful residents of the Northeast celebrated when they saw Dominion Resources, Inc., crew members coming to their aid and remain grateful for their outstanding service; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the Senate, the House of Delegates concurring, That the General Assembly hereby commend Dominion Resources, Inc., for its work to restore power to Virginians and those impacted in the Northeast in the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the Senate prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Dominion Resources, Inc., as an expression of the General Assembly’s gratitude and admiration for the company’s commitment to service.
