Commending William C. O'Donovan.

WHEREAS, William C. O’Donovan, a member of the Virginia Commonwealth University Communications Hall of Fame, is a respected journalist whose distinguished career has been marked by fairness and impartiality; and

WHEREAS, a native of Rye, New York, William “Bill” O’Donovan worked at newspapers in White Plains, New York, and Stockton, California, gaining valuable experience that he used while in service to the country in the United States Army; and

WHEREAS, while stationed in Vietnam, Bill O’Donovan served as an officer assigned to II Field Force Headquarters at Long Binh, where he edited a magazine, wrote speeches, and engaged in public relations; and

WHEREAS, a graduate of the University of Detroit, Bill O’Donovan relocated to Williamsburg in 1970 and studied at The College of William and Mary; and

WHEREAS, in 1971, Bill O’Donovan joined Virginia’s oldest newspaper, the Virginia Gazette, as a reporter, eventually serving as managing editor and publisher until the paper was bought by Chesapeake Publishing Corporation in 1986; and

WHEREAS, Bill O’Donovan was named vice president of Chesapeake Publishing Corporation and vice president and publisher of the Virginia Gazette, Tidewater Review, and Williamsburg Magazine; and

WHEREAS, known and admired by his colleagues for his journalistic integrity, Bill O’Donovan faithfully served the readership of the Virginia Gazette, Tidewater Review, and Williamsburg Magazine for 26 years; and

WHEREAS, Bill O’Donovan received the Virginia Press Association’s D. Lathan Mims Award for Editorial Leadership and was inducted into the Virginia Commonwealth University Communications Hall of Fame in 2011; and

WHEREAS, in 2012, the Virginia Press Association appointed Bill O’Donovan as its representative to the Virginia Coalition for Open Government; and

WHEREAS, a man of integrity, Bill O’Donovan made many contributions to journalism over the course of his career and provided an invaluable service to his readers; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the Senate of Virginia, That William C. O’Donovan hereby be commended on a distinguished career in journalism that spanned more than four decades; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the Senate prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to William C. O’Donovan as an expression of the Senate of Virginia’s admiration for his dedication to his profession and best wishes in his future endeavors.
