HOUSE RESOLUTION NO. 546
Commending Beth Chaverim Reform Congregation.

 

Agreed to by the House of Delegates, April 17, 2012

 

WHEREAS, Beth Chaverim Reform Congregation celebrates in 2012 its 15th anniversary of serving the families of Loudoun and Fairfax Counties; and

WHEREAS, in 1997 a small group of families came together to form a Reform Jewish Congregation; today, Beth Chaverim Reform Congregation provides a spiritual community to more than 140 families where the religious, cultural, and celebratory aspects of Jewish life can be experienced; and

WHEREAS, Beth Chaverim, which means House of Friends, Reform Congregation welcomes a diverse group of members in an open and egalitarian environment; and

WHEREAS, Beth Chaverim Reform Congregation offers Jewish religious education to over 150 children and a wide array of programs and traditional services, such as Chanukah Parties, Purim Festivals, and Passover Seders; and

WHEREAS, Beth Chaverim Reform Congregation holds a discussion group for interfaith couples, where participants can discuss religious and cultural differences and their influence on raising children and extended family interactions; and

WHEREAS, Beth Chaverim Reform Congregation also offers Generation Jones Chavurah, a fellowship group to address the needs of those individuals too old to be Generation X and too young to be a Baby Boomer; and

WHEREAS, students at Beth Chaverim Reform Congregation participate in the Jewish Community Relations Council of Greater Washington’s Youth Promoting Tolerance Project Proposal, which invites middle and high school students to submit proposals for projects that address the Holocaust, genocide, or other areas of intolerance; and

WHEREAS, in 2012 Beth Chaverim Reform Congregation proudly celebrates its 15th anniversary and looks forward to continuing to welcome members to its community; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, That Beth Chaverim Reform Congregation hereby be commended on the occasion of its 15th anniversary; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Linda Joseph, Rabbi of Beth Chaverim Reform Congregation, as an expression of the House of Delegates’ congratulations and admiration for the congregation’s commitment to serving its members and the community.

Commending Woodbridge Senior High School.

WHEREAS, in 2014, Woodbridge Senior High School celebrates 50 years of exceptional service to the youth of the Woodbridge and Lake Ridge communities; and

WHEREAS, Woodbridge Senior High School opened in 1964 and initially enrolled the classes of 1966, 1967, and 1968; the school grew rapidly through the 1960s, moving to its present location in 1974 when the original building became Woodbridge Middle School; and

WHEREAS, during the 1980s, Woodbridge Senior High School was one of the largest schools in the Commonwealth, and it was recognized as the top school in the Commonwealth in both athletics and academics in the 1990 - 1991 academic year; and

WHEREAS, Woodbridge Senior High School students have won acclaim through the school’s music programs and drama productions, and both the boys’ and girls’ sports teams have earned district, regional, and state championship titles; and

WHEREAS, earning numerous other awards and accolades, Woodbridge Senior High School regularly appears in the top 10 percent of high schools on the Washington Post’s annual America’s Most Challenging High Schools index; and

WHEREAS, in 1999, as part of the Prince William County Public Schools Specialty School Initiative, Woodbridge Senior High School became the Center for Fine and Performing Arts, offering new opportunities for students in drama, music, visual arts, dance, and creative writing; and

WHEREAS, Woodbridge Senior High School also offers an advanced placement program and the Challenge of Engineering program, which delivers college credits and has developed an award-winning robotics program; and

WHEREAS, Woodbridge Senior High School will commemorate its 50th anniversary with the “50 Years of WSHS” celebration on September 12 - 13, 2014, featuring music, entertainment, alumni events, class reunions, and an open house; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, That Woodbridge Senior High School hereby be commended for its outstanding service to the youth of Woodbridge and Lake Ridge on the occasion of its 50th anniversary; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to David Huckestein, the principal of Woodbridge Senior High School, as an expression of the House of Delegates’ admiration for the school’s storied history and contributions to the community.
