HJ656: Celebrating the life of James Winfield Bowers.
WHEREAS, James Winfield Bowers, a passionate professor of law, active member of the Southwest Virginia community, and devoted father and husband, died on May 8, 2014; and
WHEREAS, James “Jim” Winfield Bowers discovered his passion for the law while earning bachelor’s and law degrees from Yale University; and
WHEREAS, Jim Bowers risked his life for the freedom of America as a member of the United States Army and was deployed in combat in the Vietnam War; and
WHEREAS, Jim Bowers developed his gift for teaching as a part-time professor at a night law school in St. Paul, Minnesota, and began his full-time teaching career at Texas Tech University School of Law in 1978; five years later, he joined the faculty of the Louisiana State University Law Center, where he mentored, inspired, and changed the lives of students for three decades; and
WHEREAS, in 2012, Jim Bowers and his beloved wife, Lucy S. McGough, moved to Southwest Virginia to brighten the lives of students and faculty at the Appalachian School of Law in Grundy; as a professor at the Appalachian School of Law, he taught Legal Process, Small Business Entities, Bankruptcy Law, and Secured Transactions; and
WHEREAS, Jim Bowers instantly became a friend of and mentor to the residents of Southwest Virginia, including the animals at the Grundy Animal Shelter; and
WHEREAS, Jim Bowers will be fondly remembered and dearly missed by his devoted wife, children, grandchildren, dachshund hounds, colleagues, and students; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby note with great sadness the loss of James Winfield Bowers, a dedicated educator who loved life and selflessly helped those in need; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of James Winfield Bowers as an expression of the General Assembly’s respect for his memory.
