HJ702: Day to Serve; designating as each day from September 11 to October 10, 2015.
WHEREAS, volunteer efforts strengthen and enrich communities throughout the Commonwealth, and Virginia’s volunteers are selfless, energetic, creative, passionate, and professional; and
WHEREAS, The Edward M. Kennedy Serve America Act, approved by Congress and enacted into law on April 21, 2009, designated September 11 to be observed as an annual National Day of Service and Remembrance; and
WHEREAS, Day to Serve is an annual event that transcends political and religious differences to unite people of all faiths, races, cultures, beliefs, and backgrounds with a shared goal of helping those in need and improving their communities; and
WHEREAS, Day to Serve is designed to foster volunteerism and community service; on September 11, 2015, numerous service projects will take place throughout the Commonwealth, many of which will last into October; and
WHEREAS, on a Day to Serve, individuals, faith groups, businesses, government agencies, and organizations throughout the Commonwealth are invited to support, participate in, or organize local projects to enhance their communities and help those in need; and
WHEREAS, all Virginians are encouraged to offer their time and talents within their communities and make an ongoing commitment to service throughout the year; and
WHEREAS, the residents of the Commonwealth will join with residents of Maryland, West Virginia, and Washington, D.C., in participating in Day to Serve; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly designate each day from September 11 to October 10, in 2015 and in each succeeding year, as a Day to Serve in Virginia; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates transmit a copy of this resolution to the director of Day to Serve so that members of the organization may be apprised of the sense of the General Assembly of Virginia in this matter; and, be it
RESOLVED FINALLY, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates post the designation of this day on the General Assembly’s website.
