Celebrating the life of R. David O'Dell, Jr.

WHEREAS, R. David O’Dell, Jr., a respected businessman and the former Mayor of Montross, who dedicated much of his life to public service, died on December 31, 2014; and

WHEREAS, a native of Warsaw, David O’Dell served the Montross community as the owner and operator of Blue and Gray Food Stores, Inc., where he earned a reputation for exceptional customer service; and

WHEREAS, desirous to be of further service to the community, David O’Dell became active in local civics and ran for the Montross Town Council to ensure that the needs of his fellow residents were addressed; and

WHEREAS, the longest-serving mayor and council member in Montross history, David O’Dell served as mayor from 1988 to 1992, vice mayor from 1992 to 1999, and mayor from 1999 to 2014; he also served on the Planning Commission from 1980 to 2014; and

WHEREAS, known for his candor and efficiency, David O’Dell was an active leader who worked to ensure a high quality of life for all Montross residents, and in times of emergency, he went above and beyond in service to the community; and

WHEREAS, David O’Dell enjoyed fellowship and worship with the community as a member of St. James’ Episcopal Church, where he served on the vestry; and

WHEREAS, a loyal husband, father, and friend, David O’Dell will be fondly remembered and greatly missed by his wife of 46 years, Frances; sons, John and Richard, and their families; and numerous other family members and friends; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby note with great sadness the loss of R. David O’Dell, Jr., a businessman, public servant, and pillar of the Montross community; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of R. David O’Dell, Jr., as an expression of the General Assembly’s respect for his memory.
