Commending the Virginia Commonwealth University School of Education.

 

Agreed to by the House of Delegates, January 30, 2015
Agreed to by the Senate, February 5, 2015

 

WHEREAS, the Virginia Commonwealth University School of Education, which has inspired and supported countless future educators, marks 50 years of leadership and active community service in the Commonwealth in 2015; and

WHEREAS, founded in 1964, the Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU) School of Education has prepared teachers, counselors, and administrators for work in elementary, middle, and high schools; graduates have gone on to work in urban and rural schools, education agencies, and other learning environments; and

WHEREAS, the VCU School of Education has also pioneered an innovative and inclusive education and community employment model for individuals with disabilities; and

WHEREAS, with approximately $29 million in external grant funding, five academic departments, and eight research and development centers, the VCU School of Education is ranked by U.S. News and World Report as one of the top 20 public graduate schools in the nation; and

WHEREAS, many of the VCU School of Education’s 19,000 graduates have held key leadership positions in urban schools or other challenging teaching environments; and

WHEREAS, the VCU School of Education has grown to include 63 instructional and 100 research faculty members, many of whom have won awards or gained recognition nationally and internationally for their teaching methods, influential research, expertise in their fields, and diligent service to the community; and

WHEREAS, throughout its 50-year history, the VCU School of Education has been ably led by 10 deans, two of whom have gone on to serve as university presidents; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby commend the Virginia Commonwealth University School of Education on the occasion of its 50th anniversary; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the Virginia Commonwealth University School of Education as an expression of the General Assembly’s admiration for the school’s many contributions to the Commonwealth and the field of education.
