Celebrating the life of Sara Jean Dobie Collins.

WHEREAS, Sara Jean Dobie Collins, a respected historian and a beloved member of the Arlington County community, died on December 3, 2014; and

WHEREAS, Sara Collins earned a bachelor’s degree from Albion College and a master’s degree in library science from the Catholic University of America; and

WHEREAS, a longtime resident of Arlington County, Sara Collins enjoyed a long and distinguished career with the Arlington County Public Library, where she developed the local history collection and helped establish the Arlington Community Archives; and

WHEREAS, Sara Collins also conceived an oral history program at the Center for Local History; the program continues to provide researchers and fellow historians with unique information unavailable from other sources; and

WHEREAS, deeply respected in her field, Sara Collins offered her expertise to local museums and was a member of several peer and professional organizations at the local, state, and national levels; and

WHEREAS, Sara Collins shared her wealth of historical knowledge freely by publishing numerous articles and hosting workshops and seminars; in 1997, she received the Pogue Award from Oral History in the Mid-Atlantic Region for her contributions to the field of oral history; and

WHEREAS, Sara Collins enjoyed fellowship and worship with the community as an active member of Arlington United Methodist Church; she served as the church librarian, played violin in the orchestra, and had led the church’s 150th anniversary celebration; and

WHEREAS, Sara Collins will be fondly remembered and greatly missed by her children, Catherine and Kyle, and their families and numerous other family members and friends; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby note with great sadness the loss of Sara Jean Dobie Collins, a respected historian and beloved member of the Arlington County community; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the Center for Local History at Arlington Public Library as an expression of the General Assembly’s respect for Sara Jean Dobie Collins’ memory.
