Celebrating the life of the Honorable William Eldridge Frenzel.

WHEREAS, the Honorable William Eldridge Frenzel of McLean, a trade policy expert and public servant who ably represented the residents of Minnesota’s Third District in the United States House of Representatives, died on November 17, 2014; and

WHEREAS, a native of St. Paul, Minnesota, William “Bill” Eldridge Frenzel graduated from Dartmouth College and served his country as a lieutenant in the United States Navy Reserve during the Korean War; and

WHEREAS, a respected businessman, Bill Frenzel was the president of Minneapolis Terminal Warehouse Company and served in the Minnesota House of Representatives; desirous to be of further service to his home state and country, he ran for and was elected to the United States House of Representatives in 1970; and

WHEREAS, Bill Frenzel faithfully represented the residents of Minnesota’s Third District from 1971 to 1991; he supported fiscal responsibility as a member of the House Committee on Ways and Means and as the ranking Republican on the House budget panel in 1989 and 1990; and

WHEREAS, supporting and sponsoring many important pieces of legislation during his tenure, Bill Frenzel worked with colleagues in both parties to build mutual respect and foster bipartisan cooperation for the good of the nation; and

WHEREAS, after retiring from public service, Bill Frenzel joined the Brookings Institution; over the next 23 years, he was a trusted advisor to Presidents William J. Clinton on the North American Free Trade Agreement, George W. Bush on tax reform, and Barack H. Obama on trade negotiations and policy; and

WHEREAS, Bill Frenzel offered his leadership, wisdom, and expertise to several civic organizations and committees, including as a cochair of the Committee for a Responsible Federal Budget, where he was admired for his leadership and commitment to building a strong future for the nation; and

WHEREAS, Bill Frenzel served as president of the U.S. - Japan Business Council, and he received the Emperor of Japan’s Order of the Chrysanthemum; he also founded the International Tax and Investment Center to assist emerging market economies in Central Asia and the Middle East and develop transparent tax and trade policies to enhance trust in government and fight global corruption; and

WHEREAS, a man of great integrity, Bill Frenzel was a trusted mentor and devoted friend to countless fellow public servants and government officials; he served the United States, Minnesota, and the Commonwealth with the utmost professionalism, dedication, and distinction; and

WHEREAS, Bill Frenzel will be greatly missed and fondly remembered by his wife, Ruthy; daughters, Deborah, Pamela, and Mitty, and their families; and numerous other family members, friends, and colleagues on both sides of the aisle; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby note with great sadness the loss of the Honorable William Eldridge Frenzel, a dedicated public servant and a respected member of the McLean community; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of the Honorable William Eldridge Frenzel as an expression of the General Assembly’s respect for his memory.
