Commending the Ocean Lakes High School football team.

 

Agreed to by the House of Delegates, January 16, 2015

 

WHEREAS, the Ocean Lakes High School football team won the 2014 Virginia High School League Group 6A championship on December 13, 2014, the first state football title in the Virginia Beach school’s history, and the crowning touch to an undefeated season; and

WHEREAS, with a score of 30 - 24, the Ocean Lakes team defeated the Wildcats of Centreville High School, the defending title holder; the Dolphins’ win came in overtime, making for an intensely exciting finish for the newly crowned state champions; and

WHEREAS, the Virginia High School League Group 6A championship game was played at Scott Stadium at the University of Virginia; the Ocean Lakes team had prepared long and hard for the Wildcats’ variety of defenses; and

WHEREAS, senior Ocean Lakes offensive player Jaason Lewis rushed for a school record of 267 yards in the title game; he scored three touchdowns, including the winning play during overtime; the experienced offensive line also played a key role; and

WHEREAS, the victory marks the first time since 2004 that a public school in Virginia Beach has won a state title; Ocean Lakes High School has been a top contender in recent years, and the win was especially satisfying to those who had played in the 2012 championship game; and

WHEREAS, the Ocean Lakes Dolphins trailed 10 - 7 at halftime; during the second half, the Dolphins scored a field goal and two touchdowns and thought victory was theirs, but the game went into overtime after their opponents scored two touchdowns in three minutes during the fourth quarter; and

WHEREAS, the Dolphins maintained their steely focus during overtime and scored the winning touchdown on the first play of their possession; the team’s preparation and dedication held them in good stead throughout the championship season; and

WHEREAS, the 2014 victory is a tribute to the team’s talent and discipline, the hard work of head coach Chris Scott and his staff, and the strong support of the entire Ocean Lakes High School community; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, That the Ocean Lakes High School football team hereby be commended for winning the 2014 Virginia High School League Group 6A championship, the first state football title in the Virginia Beach school’s history; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Chris Scott, head coach of the Ocean Lakes High School football team, as an expression of the House of Delegates’ admiration and congratulations for this outstanding athletic accomplishment.
