Celebrating the life of Julie Fangming Ho Rao.

 

Agreed to by the House of Delegates, January 23, 2015

 

WHEREAS, Julie Fangming Ho Rao of McLean, an enthusiastic volunteer and an accomplished dietitian, died on August 30, 2014; and

WHEREAS, a native of Chongqing, China, Julie Rao immigrated to the United States with her family in the 1950s and settled in the Washington, D.C., area; and

WHEREAS, Julie Rao graduated from Western High School, attended George Washington University, and earned a bachelor’s degree from Columbia Union College and a master’s degree from Rutgers University; and

WHEREAS, in 1969, Julie Rao became the chief dietitian of John F. Kennedy Medical Center in New Jersey; she later became the chief therapeutic dietitian at Holy Cross Hospital in Maryland and was promoted to chief production dietitian; and

WHEREAS, Julie Rao used her expertise to serve the youth of the community, becoming the food service supervisor for Area IV of Fairfax County Public Schools in 1975; and

WHEREAS, an active volunteer for the Republican Party, Julie Rao founded the Cosmo Republican Woman’s Club and was recognized by the National Federation of Republican Women as one of its ten most outstanding grassroots organizers; and

WHEREAS, Julie Rao served on President Ronald W. Reagan’s inauguration committee, organizing the first Asian-Pacific Presidential Ball; she then worked with Senator John W. Warner and served as a White House assistant in the Office of Public Liaison, before being appointed director of volunteers of the Organization for America’s Future; and

WHEREAS, after serving on President George H. W. Bush’s campaign, Julie Rao became the Asian Director of Inauguration Balls and a special assistant to the commissioner of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration; and

WHEREAS, Julie Rao will be fondly remembered and greatly missed by her beloved husband, David; children, Michael and Debbie, and their families; and numerous other family members, friends, and colleagues; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED, That the House of Delegates hereby note with great sadness the loss of Julie Rao, an accomplished dietician and volunteer in McLean; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of Julie Rao as an expression of the House of Delegates’ respect for her memory.
