Celebrating the life of Linwood Custalow, M.D.

 

Agreed to by the House of Delegates, January 23, 2015

 

WHEREAS, Linwood Custalow, M.D., a member of the Mattaponi Tribe, a respected physician in Newport News, an active participant in many medical and faith-based organizations, and a devoted husband and father, died on December 19, 2014; and

WHEREAS, Linwood “Little Bear” Custalow was born on the Mattaponi reservation in King William County and was the first Native American to graduate from a medical college in the Commonwealth; he received a degree from the Medical College of Virginia in 1964; and

WHEREAS, during a 38-year career, Linwood Custalow specialized in ear, nose, and throat medicine, facial plastic surgery, and treatment of allergies; he helped found the Association of American Indian Physicians and he also assisted in providing health care to members of the Mattaponi Tribe; and

WHEREAS, Linwood Custalow was a diplomate of the American Board of Otolaryngology; he also was a member of the National Board of Medical Examiners, a fellow of the American Academy of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery, and a member of the International College of Surgeons and many other medical organizations; and

WHEREAS, in 1966, Linwood Custalow was named an Outstanding Young Man of America; he also was honored as an Outstanding Personality of the South in 1968, and he received the Unknown Indian Award in 1990 for his service to Native American communities; and

WHEREAS, Linwood Custalow made valuable contributions as a member of the boards of Youth for Christ/USA, Youth Challenge, numerous churches, Bacone College, and Bluefield College, from which he received an associate’s degree; and

WHEREAS, Linwood Custalow was active in tribal affairs and was historian of the Mattaponi Tribe; he also was co-author of The True Story of Pocahontas, the Other Side of History, which was published in 2007; and

WHEREAS, predeceased by his son, Darryl, Linwood Custalow will be greatly missed and fondly remembered by his wife, Barbara; his children, Beth, Amy, Lisa, and Julie and their families; his siblings and those in his extended family; members of the Mattaponi Tribe; and many friends; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED, That the House of Delegates hereby note with great sadness the loss of Linwood Custalow, M.D., a member of the Mattaponi Tribe, who was a respected surgeon, an active participant in many medical and faith-based organizations, and a devoted husband and father; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of Linwood Custalow, M.D., as an expression of the House of Delegates’ respect for his memory.
