Commending Mary Jane Hogue.

 

Agreed to by the House of Delegates, February 13, 2015

 

WHEREAS, Mary Jane Hogue, a passionate historian who has worked to protect and preserve the history and heritage of the Richmond area, retires as executive director of Historic Richmond in 2015; and

WHEREAS, throughout her 33-year career with Historic Richmond, including eight years as executive director, Mary Jane Hogue helped the organization fulfill its mission to preserve the city’s distinctive character, promote revitalization of historic buildings and neighborhoods, and highlight the city’s contributions to architecture in the Commonwealth; and

WHEREAS, under Mary Jane Hogue’s leadership, Historic Richmond saved the National Theater from demolition and helped the downtown landmark grow into a thriving entertainment venue; and

WHEREAS, Mary Jane Hogue promoted and encouraged efforts to create more attractive gateways to the city and revitalize neighborhoods to create safer, stronger communities; and

WHEREAS, during Mary Jane Hogue’s tenure, Historic Richmond stabilized and sold the Patterson-Schutte House, one of the few remaining 18th-century houses in the area, the Turner-Sinton House in Church Hill, and the Meredith House and 617 St. Peter Street in Jackson Ward; and

WHEREAS, respected for her vision and outstanding fiscal management, Mary Jane Hogue was instrumental in the restoration and reopening of the Monumental Church, which has become a premier venue for weddings in Richmond; and

WHEREAS, through her professionalism, dedication, and care for the community, Mary Jane Hogue leaves a legacy of excellence for her successor at Historic Richmond; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, That Mary Jane Hogue hereby be commended for her devoted service to the Richmond community on the occasion of her retirement as executive director of Historic Richmond; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Mary Jane Hogue as an expression of the House of Delegates’ admiration for her role as a defender of Richmond’s past and an advocate for its future.
