Celebrating the life of the Reverend Dr. David Traynham Anderson.

 

Agreed to by the House of Delegates, February 20, 2015

 

WHEREAS, the Reverend Dr. David Traynham Anderson of Henrico County, a former chaplain at St. Christopher’s School in Richmond, who was a Methodist minister before becoming an Episcopal priest and serving in various capacities in the Diocese of Virginia, died on May 27, 2014; and

WHEREAS, the Reverend Dr. David Anderson, son of the Honorable Howard P. and Mildred W. Anderson, was born on June 16, 1954, in Halifax, Virginia, and graduated from Washington and Lee University; he received a master’s degree from Vanderbilt Divinity School and a doctoral degree from Union Theological Seminary; and

WHEREAS, the Reverend Dr. David Anderson was ordained a United Methodist minister in 1980 and served Burkeville Charge and Reveille United Methodist Church in Richmond; and

WHEREAS, beginning in 1986, the Reverend Dr. David Anderson became chaplain of St. Christopher’s School in Richmond, a ministry he loved; in addition to his pastoral duties, he taught history and was chair of the religion department, senior class adviser, and assistant lacrosse coach; and

WHEREAS, for the Reverend Dr. David Anderson, his work as director of community service at St. Christopher’s School was especially fulfilling as he showed the boys that leaders are servants first; they tutored in city schools, worked in the James River Park system, and volunteered in low-income areas; and

WHEREAS, the Reverend Dr. David Anderson served on the board of the Peter Paul Development Center in Richmond and was chair while its new facility was under construction; he also was a member of the Founder’s Board of Anna Julia Cooper Episcopal School in Richmond; and

WHEREAS, the Reverend Dr. David Anderson also was educated in Anglican studies at Cambridge University in England and Virginia Theological Seminary; in 2000, he was ordained in the Episcopal church and he worked for the Episcopal Diocese of Virginia in several capacities, including serving as chief of a commission on ministry, chair of the Committee on Priesthood, and member of a grants committee; and

WHEREAS, in 2003, the Reverend Dr. David Anderson became assistant rector of St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church and then was named vicar, and in 2011, he was named rector of Saint James the Less Episcopal Church in Ashland; and

WHEREAS, the Reverend Dr. David Anderson will be greatly missed and fondly remembered by his wife, Mary; children, Matthew, Meaghan, and Alexa; and many other family members and friends; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED, That the House of Delegates hereby note with great sadness the loss of the Reverend Dr. David Traynham Anderson of Henrico County, former chaplain at St. Christopher’s School in Richmond, a former Methodist minister, and an Episcopal priest; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of the Reverend Dr. David Traynham Anderson as an expression of the House of Delegates’ respect for his memory.
