Commending Hollin Meadows Elementary School.

 

Agreed to by the House of Delegates, February 27, 2015

 

WHEREAS, in 2015, Hollin Meadows Elementary School in Fairfax County celebrates its 50th anniversary of providing excellence in education by ensuring that every child receives the best education possible in a respectful, safe, and nurturing environment; and

WHEREAS, Hollin Meadows Elementary School opened in 1965 and serves several historical neighborhoods, including Gum Springs, the oldest African American community in Fairfax County, and Hollin Hills, a mid-century planned community featuring more than 400 architecturally modern homes; and

WHEREAS, in 1994, Hollin Meadows Elementary School became one of Fairfax County’s first Science and Math Focus Schools, and in 1997, it was one of the first schools in the county to have a full-day kindergarten program; and

WHEREAS, Hollin Meadows Elementary School’s outdoor learning space features a Virginia native habitat garden, a form and texture garden, a woodland habitat, and a flower and vegetable garden; the outdoor learning area encompasses nearly 14,000 square feet; and

WHEREAS, lettuce grown in Hollin Meadows Elementary School’s vegetable garden is served at the school’s annual Thanksgiving luncheon; more than 1,000 students, family members, and guests take part in the feast, which is a highlight of the school year; and

WHEREAS, for many years, the students and staff at Hollin Meadows Elementary School have emphasized healthy eating and physical activity; a visit from First Lady Michelle Obama and United States Secretary of Agriculture Tom Vilsack in 2009 recognized the school’s commitment to healthful eating habits and the benefits of physical activity; and

WHEREAS, in 2011, Hollin Meadows Elementary School was recognized as a finalist for an Intel School of Distinction Award in the area of elementary mathematics, one of many recognitions the school has received; and

WHEREAS, with a current enrollment of 665 diverse learners in pre-kindergarten through sixth grade, Hollin Meadows Elementary School focuses on actively engaging all students in learning so that they can achieve their full potential; a vibrant Parent Teacher Association also supports those efforts; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, That Hollin Meadows Elementary School in Fairfax County hereby be commended on the occasion of its 50th anniversary of providing excellence in education; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Jon Gates, principal of Hollin Meadows Elementary School, as an expression of the House of Delegates’ congratulations and admiration for the school’s determination to see that all students receive the best education possible and best wishes as it continues to educate the children of Fairfax County.
