HR307: Celebrating the life of Lieutenant Colonel John Albert Bornmann, Jr., USA (Ret.).
WHEREAS, Lieutenant Colonel John Albert Bornmann, Jr., USA (Ret.), a distinguished veteran and a respected leader in the Fairfax County community, died on February 17, 2015; and
WHEREAS, John Albert “Al” Bornmann, Jr., grew up in New Smyrna Beach, Florida, and graduated from the United States Military Academy with a commission as a second lieutenant; he later furthered his education with master’s degrees from the Georgia Institute of Technology and Southern Illinois University, and he qualified as a professional engineer in Florida and the Commonwealth; and
WHEREAS, Second Lieutenant Bornmann’s first assignment was with the 43rd Engineer Brigade, and he served in Vietnam with the 39th Engineer Battalion from 1968 to 1969; he continued to rise through the ranks, serving at postings throughout the United States and Germany; and
WHEREAS, Lieutenant Colonel Bornmann’s final assignment was with the Office of the Secretary of Defense; over the course of his distinguished military career, he earned a Bronze Star Medal, a Bronze Star Medal with a V Device, the Purple Heart, the Meritorious Service Medal, the Air Medal, the Army Commendation Medal, and several other decorations; and
WHEREAS, after his retirement from military service, Lieutenant Colonel Bornmann worked for SRA International, Inc., for more than two decades; he continued to support his fellow veterans, serving as president of the Fort Belvoir Chapter of the Armed Forces Communications and Electronics Association in 2000; and
WHEREAS, Lieutenant Colonel Bornmann was a proud, lifelong member of the Boy Scouts of America, attaining the rank of Eagle Scout as a young man; he served in leadership positions at troop and district levels and earned the prestigious Silver Beaver Award; and
WHEREAS, Lieutenant Colonel Bornmann worked to strengthen and enhance the Fairfax County community by volunteering his time and wise leadership with several other civic and service organizations; he served as president of the Stratford on the Potomac Section Four Neighborhood Association, cochair of the Mount Vernon Council of Citizens’ Associations, senior warden of St. Aidan’s Episcopal Church, and a member of the steering committee of the Mount Vernon Neighborhood Friends; and
WHEREAS, Lieutenant Colonel Bornmann will be fondly remembered and greatly missed by his wife of 47 years, Priscilla; children, Kirsten and John III, and their families; and numerous other family members and friends; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That the House of Delegates hereby note with great sadness the loss of Lieutenant Colonel John Albert Bornmann, Jr., USA (Ret.), a decorated war hero and respected community leader in Fairfax County; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of Lieutenant Colonel John Albert Bornmann, Jr., USA (Ret.), as an expression of the House of Delegates’ respect for his memory.
