Description

Support payments by county or city. Designates the Department of Social Services as the entity to which a county or city within the boundaries of which a prisoner is put to work on a workhouse, city farm, or work squad shall pay funds for the support of the prisoner's spouse or children. The bill increases the minimum amount that the county or city shall pay from $5 to $20 dollars and increases the maximum amount that the county or city shall pay from $25 to $40 dollars for each week in the discretion of the court during any part of which any work is performed by the prisoner. THIS UPDATES A RATHER OLD AND INFREQUENTLY USED PROVISION THAT ALLOWS CERTAIN LOCALITIES TO ADOPT A PROGRAM THAT WOULD PAY INMATES FOR CERTAIN LABOR AND ALLOW THE LOCALITY TO MAKE A PAYMENT TO THE DEPARTMENT OF SOCIAL SERVICES FOR SPOUSAL SUPPORT. IT IS A VOLUNTARY PROGRAM THAT NO LOCALITY HAS TO PARTICIPATE IN AND IT INCREASES THE MINIMUM DAILY PAYMENT FROM $5 FOR A DAY'S WORK TO $20 FOR A DAY'S WORK.
